Austin-Healey Sprite - refurbishing sprite 1 windows

WNP 170, has sat in a garage for 25 years after my brother pranged it. now being reborn. i have new perspex from MOSS and would be grateful for any advice on how to fit - 'cos its pretty tight!! i was going to use a clamp to gently ease the frame appart. anyone done this before? because i don't want to break the new ones!!!

Just came across your query re windows on Sprite. I don't see any replies but assume you have probably sorted it out by now. I did have the problem and did brake a window too. I imagine the thickness of the felt may have had a bearing on the problem as it possibly was thicker than the original. You certainly need a helper to hold the frame to allow you get enough pressure on the centre of the perspex to bend it sufficiently to get it into place. I achieved with most but broke one and in fact just used another piece of regular perspex which i cut out myself and stuck on the flanges with epoxy. Hope u got it sorted.

thank youi for replying - i had almost given up help. i have yet to address the problem. the frames do strech slighly upwards, and other have suggested putting them in hot water then kneeling on them. vso i will have a go. is the felt really necessary, and does it just go in the inside rim? do you have any experience of replkacing the windscreeen glass too.
best wishes in anticipation

Re your windscreen...if you are going to replace the glass I suggest you fit a new windscreen seal...fit the seal to the glass whilst it is out of the car..don't break it!!...use a lubricant ie washing up liquid around the seal..in the grooves where it sits around the frame...get a length of PVC wire (Halfords)or wire from an old wiring loom...place it around the outside of the seal ..cross the wires where they meet in the middle...put the whole glass and the seal against the frame ... keep pressure against the glass whilst pulling the wire out from around the seal..continue around the frame until the seal is fitting in the frame....hope this helps..Ian.

many thanks, but just as i was about to break it i discovered a kite mark in the centre lower edge saying triplex- so i won't need to repace it as i thought it was tempered glass. BUT- many thanks for your advice.

best wishes

Replacing the plastic side screens with a Moss kit for the Mk 1 Sprite. I had real difficulty doing this.
However last summer put the whole lot in my green house. When the temperature hit 100 deg the plastic was fairly bendable and I took the bull by the horns and just pushed and bent it and it sort of clicked into place. I replaced the felt after the screens were in. I also replaced the outer rubber seal.I broke one sidescreen plastic and an outer rubber seal before I managed it.The outer rubber seals on the originals are nearly always perished.
