MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1275 2-bolt oil pump
I'm just checking over a new oil pump before fitting it to my motor. Should the backplate have a smear of sealant, Blue Hylomar or similar? There was none when I removed it. Or is it supposed to leak into the tin cover on the engine backplate? Is loctite the way to go if I can't use the 4-bolt tab washers? Ta, Mark |

I've always fitted them straight out of the box. Normally with the 2-bolt, spring washers are used IIRC, although a dab of Loctite can't hurt. |

I always strip mine down and clean up the casting/machining burrs so the oil flows through a little better, making sure not to leave any filings in there. Prime with engine rebuild oil to help with initial start up. Then just bolt it on with a new gasket. Dave |

Thanks for your quick replies chaps. So you don't seal the back plate to the pump body? Mark |
M Crossley |
Don't put hylomar near your engine! You'll find long strands of it in various oil galleries in years to come! The backplate should be fine without a sealant but if you want to, Stags Wellseal, like treacle and never sets so won't break of strands like hylomar. |

Make sure you seal the tin cover to the backplate - nowt wrong with Hylomar, if it is good enough for Rolls Royce it is good enough for MGs! Silicone sealants are more likely to block oil ways - but then no sealant should be applied to excess, just a smear on the gasket is all that is needed. |

Loctite 598 or 5910 are what I use for additional stiction and sealing - just a smear as Chris says... |

Ah Chris, thanks. I didn't realise that the tin pump cover should be sealed to the engine back plate. Is it supposed to be a tight fit? I assumed that it was just a dust cover and the area around the outside of the oil pump was dry. Mark |
M Crossley |
No - if you look there is a cut out at on the pump that fits at the bottom to allow oil to flow back into the sump through a hole in the crankcase. The tin cover is a reasonable fit but not oil tight, hence a smear of sealant on the flange. |
