MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1275 clutch plate for type 9 conversion

David Manners has discontinued the special clutch plate used for their type9 conversions so any idea where I would now buy one?

You can however buy the full clutch kit for £217 from them which must include what I want though I don't want to pay that much for it!!!!

Just found out that MOSS sell the FL one so I have ordered one. Seems to be some rationalisation going on with 5 speed type 9 conversions.

Dont throw your old plate away as there are firms that will recondition them and reline.

What od are they

Same as a 1275 @ 6.5" od but with a centre having 23 splines. Unless they have changed since I last did a T9 conversion.

Thanks Alan, I'd been thinking Early Mk1 Escort 1100, they had a 6 1/2" clutch but they're 7/8 x 20spline

Mine uses what I believe is an Hillman Avenger disc, though I am not sure these days. It was selected many years ago after a helpful local independant motor factor had opened a couple of dozen boxes to try various discs on the input shaft that I took in to him. It's handy to know that Moss now do them as a listed item as I suspect Hillman plates might be hard to come by these days.

Guy, the Hillman Avenger one is 7.5 inch diameter so can be used for 1098 engines (but should really have its diameter turned down to 7.25 inch) and I think 1500. Too big for the 1275 unless you modify the flywheel to take the 7.5 inch Ford clutch.

Maybe not Avenger then, Rob. I know it was slightly larger than my original 1275 plate, but still fitted within the 1275 clutch cover. I had lightened the flywheel so had a fresh face for the driven side, but the clutch cover was only a couple of months old and had done less than 3000 miles so I wanted to reuse it.

There is currently a Hillman Avenger plate on eBay for £24.

Apparently it also fits a Plymouth Cricket.

Last time I fitted one (some years back) to a 1500 (Spitfire) the motor factor let the owner have two for £5. Its worth asking for obsolete parts at motor factors as I recently got three A40 Farina front brake cylinders, for my converted Frogeye, for less than a specialist asks for one.

Also recently a Club member got a 948 clutch kit from a Morris Minor parts shop for £83 whereas Moss catalogue shows £213. It pays to shop around!

We use the standard Ford Pinto clutch, with a concentric clutch release, works perfectly.

I have for sale a 1275 Midget fly wheel, this lightened and machined to take a 7.5 " clutch cover. It also has a new starter ring which has a grub screw location. This means that you can fit a replacement Ford cover and pressure plate. This has never been fitted on an engine. Give me a call on 07391352420 .
TONY GRIFFITHS

Thanks for the offer Tony but I have the same setup in the garage, but after measuring the depth to fingers it would be too deep compared with the 1275 clutch.
Its because I took an unconventional route to type 9. i.e. I had an Antec Motorsport bell housing originally intended to enable a Midget 1500 gearbox to be fitted to a 1275 engine using a SAAB 9000 concentric for clutch release. This was popular at one time for racers. To that I added a conversion plate from Canley to convert it to type 9.
It's a long story but I find there is only just enough space to allow for a 1275 clutch arrangement.
