MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1275 Water Pump

Apparently there is an "early" and "late" style water pump for the 1275. Moss USA does not provide a picture or description of the difference.

My 1275 is going in a bugeye. Do I use the early pump? I plan on retaining the generator.

Thanks, Jim

Depends on the 1275 not the ancileries.
But either will fit.
Make sure to get the one with the cast impeller in stead of the floppy folded one.
Not sure if it is early or late

According to the Moss UK catalogue (I have it on my desk - very sad) the early type - GWP132 - is cast iron and fitted up to engine no 12ce/da/h873 around 1968 and has a screw in fitting for the bypass hose. The later type - GWP134 - is alloy and the bypass hose boss is part of the casting. The major difference is that the bottom hose fitting is a different size. According to the catalogue they are interchangeable so long as you use the correct bottom hose.

The later alloy pump is pretty much standard across all the A series range. Only exception is the very late pump fitted to engines without a bypass in the cylinder head.

Depending on the manufacturer they come with cast or bent steel impellers. The cast ones are meant to be more efficient. You can use the original frogeye dynamo with any of the pumps.

I fitted an MG Metro water pump. It has a deeper cast impeller and should be more effective. It comes without a takeoff for the by-pass (I don't need one - I've got a Metro head) but you need to check that the deeper impeller does not foul on the inside of the waterway.

Thanks to all for the replies. I now have the information I need.

Some of the pumps fitted with the bypass also had the deeper impeller. IIRC they were fitted to transverse 1275 engines.
