MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1500 alternator bracket
changing my fan belt tonight i think i have found why adjusting the fan belt has allways been difficult, the adjusting bracket appears to be of a different car as it is offset towards the back of the engine instead of forwards causin it to catch the alternator when adjusting.Just wondering if anyone has an old one knocking about so i could try it and see if it makes a differance.

Looks like the right bracket but haven't looked under the hood lately. Have you tried reversing it? Also you are at the maximum length of belt for adjusting the alternator. Should be half way along the slotted bracket. |

sure its wrong as its a new fan belt and its at its limit ![]() |

Correct pulley? |

Still looks like it's correct and it wouldn't be the first time someone has been given a wrong belt. I had been running the wrong one for ages until I got the right one. I'll have a look-see at my engine tonight and report tomorrow. |

prety sure its wrong as i had to file a slot in the new alternator to match the one in the existing one when i changed it last year. |

Mark To me it looks like the mounting (engine)end of the bracket needs to be lower to give the adjusting slot a straighter aproach I've had a look around --too much time on my hands and tend to agree that your bracket is wrong -how I don't know But, I found this at Rimmers -- in stock http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID005798 |

Mark Just a little info USUALLY - The last four numbers of the part no.are the measurement for the outside circumference of the belt;if it is less than a metre it is then the last three The belt listed for your car is --GCB11088 which would be 1088mm circ. Some manufacturers go in steps of five so 1085 or 1090 would be your options--usually the lesser option is best even if you have to stretch it on as it will initially grow a tiddle Having said that ,the diff. between 1088 and 1090 is only 2mm so shouldn't really matter Just depends on what you've got there and what the actual difference is between your bracket and the correct one lengthwise really Looking at the pic. of your bracket,Is that a weld or just a mark on the bracket next to the mounting bolt ?? I'm starting to think you bracket might have self destructed some time in the past and has had the offset piece taken out and welded up shorter than normal just a thought willy |
