MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1500 dropping engine in exhaust question

Heya,

So I have finally managed to split the exhaust sections to check it all fits. The question is How much do I have to have off the engine to be able to get it to slot into the space...

I have the 4-2-1 sports exhaust system in there and currently the 4-2 section is on the engine. Can I get the engine in place with that section attached and also can I get it in with the 2-1 section in place or do I have to remove the exhaust completely for it to situate in place...?

Thanks in advance

Simon

It's OK I've found a picture that shows the exhaust going round the chassis rail :( Guess the exhaust has to come off and then get installed once the engine is in situ :(

Simon, I have the idea that the 4-2-1 exhaust either won't fit, or is difficult to fit after the engine is in the bay.

The way to do it is to slot the exhaust loosely into its place, with the bottom end down through the chassis hole, but don't fasten it to anything. Just leave it loose, or tied over to one side to keep it out of the way as you lower the engine in. Once the engine is fastened to the engine mounts, you then connect up the exhaust to the head.

Thanks for that Guy, Makes sense really as we had difficulty getting the engine out because of the exhausts in the first place. I guess I will have more cut knuckles once the engine is back in then :)

Thanks

Hi,

Added a Maniflow to my 1500 18 months ago, found the best way is to loosely fit the whole thing, drop in the engine and then pop it into place against the head.

Those clamping pieces are a bit tricky to tighten, but get some deep 3/8"unf brass nuts which vastly improves the angle of attack with the spanner.

Have to say the Maniflow is a real quality piece of kit, well worth the money.

Yeah, doubt you will manage to get the engine in with the exhaust manifold on. Sorry!

Malcolm

edit: it would be possible with the standard cast manifold on. But not a tubular one.

Hi Simon,

I helped a friend do this job a few days ago and can, as is usual, confirm the advice given here. Not sure of the manufacturer of his 4-2-1 manifold but it is good quality. As a result of getting the original loose fitting in position in the engine bay wrong we did discover it is possible to remove and replace the two separate parts of the manifold after the engine is in place. The front of the car was raised and it is a real fiddle. The other thing we discovered is that one of the clamping pieces was prevented form clamping properly by the weld where the manifold pipe meets the "plate" that faces onto the head. A little modification with the Dremel helped!
