MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1500 gearbox
hi all, on the 1500 gearbox does 2nd and 3rd gear run on different shaft than 4th gear. what i want to know is, if i had a whine in 2nd and 3rd would whine go in 4th. thanks bob. |

hi all, on the 1500 gearbox does 2nd and 3rd gear run on different shaft than 4th gear. what i want to know is, if i had a whine in 2nd and 3rd would whine go in 4th.what i am trying to work out is, i have a whine in 2 3 4 gears only when accellerating, had bearings replaced in diff and no difference.crown and pinion looked ok. tried thicker oil in gearbox to see and no difference. very hard to determine where its coming from. g/box, diff or rear hub bearing. thanks bob. |

Fourth gear is direct, so it effectively locks the first-motion shaft to the third-motion shaft. You are therefore not driving through the layshaft - although it is still spinning - and you are not relying on needle rollers or bronze bushes on the third motion shaft. |

dave are you saying you would think the noise would go in 4th. ? |

That all depends where the noise is coming from. I was replying to your first post, which didn't say that the noise was also there in fourth. |

My money is on the CWP - if not set up properly these will whine on drive and wear is not always visible on the teeth unless you look really closely under magnification, when it shows up as tiny black craters on the contact surfaces. |
