MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1500 gearbox issues - 17 tooth reverse idler

Hi, I was hoping there are a few people that might have an answer to my question.

I have a gearbox in build at the moment and we are having a nightmare locating a number of parts

One of these is the reverse idler which has 17teeth, the mg stockists only stock 18tooth (late) and 21tooth (early) idlers so ive come to the assumption that bits of my gearbox are infact from the spitfire.

If this turns out to be the case The problem is that I dont know which bits are interchangeable internally? I.e ive also bought a second gear for the gearbox will this still be usable if the box turns out to be of spitfire heritage.

Any help on this would be greatfully recieved.

Thanks in advance!

I. not sure anyonew on here will be that familiar with the details of the Triumph box; maybe try Chris Groves or Jigsaw?
David Smith

Or Rimmer Bros are very helpful if you ring them.
Guy Weller

one of the last people on earth you want to deal with are Jigsaw, Mark used to be and remains a butcher

if it's Triumph then John Yarnell at JY Classics will be able to help you or point you in the right direction

Whatever; he's a racer, he's respected by racers, and he knows stuff...
David Smith

I thought that's how you might know him, obviously he's not the driver (he's very tall and very bulky)

I'm not alone in knowing that he doesn't know his stuff and if he does he doesn't use that knowledge

let's put it this way - Lawrence could teach him ethics and I could usually do better mechanical and engineering work than him

he talks (and talks) a good job but can do an abysmal job

as I say if you ask around you'll find I'm not the only one with this opinion, ever among some racers despite his sponsorship of a race series that helps buy some silence from some quarters

it's up to J Barber what he does but as I've put I and others would recommend that he avoids there and David and no doubt some of his racing mates would disagree

I'm just trying to help by warning it's as much as I can do

gawd help us, jb only wants info on a gearbox cog not a full restoration on an ex-LeMans Spitfire ! A phone call is all it takes. I have absolutely no direct personal experience with the company, the only Triumphs I race with are the German/Dutch Triumph Competition Group.

David Smith

I do have experience and I suggest JB doesn't ring him because it isn't a good company to deal with

that's rubbish about me always being negative, as you know I repeatedly recommend some places but this place is the opposite

JB said he wants parts Jigsaw sell parts

JB asked for help and my help on this occasion has been don't ask Jigsaw ask JY Classics

so I offered a good alternative

being negative would be to keep quiet and let JB go to the butcher instead of a good specialist

not all racers respect Jigsaw, yes he eventually managed to get a replica around Le Mans after a few failed attempts but this would be more a case of in spite of rather than because of

Am trying to get hold of Chris Groves without success. Does any one have a telephone number or e mail that works.

Many thanks
