MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Ammonia
Has anyone seen the on line write ups about powering cars with ammonia. Apparently Toyota and Ford have invested millions into research and are about to launch engines using this as fuel. Ammonia will need to be stored at 150 psi but this is less than that for LPG. It would take 2 mins to refuel a car and with a tank the same size as a petrol one there would be a 500 mile range. Weight would be about the same as petrol car so no worries about being banned from a multi storey. Apparently an ammonia engine would operate like a diesel and would need a spec of diesel to start combustion. The only emmision would be water and nitrogen. Ammonia can be produced cheaply using something called the Haber process.
With all the bad press about EVs re lithium mines and disposal, range, lack of chargers, insurance cost, fire risk and dreadful resale values I am sticking to my 65 mpg, 2016, Audi A1 Jan T |

Brilliant. But KFC would oppose it. You need dead chickens for a bucket. 🤣 |

Haber process is highly energy intensive, so similar to Hydrogen engines you're not gaining anything overall and would be better off sticking to renewable electricity and batteries. Ammonia might have a place in big things like ships and heavy plant but not for personal transport. |

Maybe they envisage extracting ammonia from natural sources such as chicken poo or stale urine as was done in the past for the process of fulling https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fulling . |

Encourage drink driving and measure the efficiency of your car in it's pee per mile performance? |
