MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Another Cellulose Question..

I'm painting my car in GN25 - a light BRG.

Mixing the paint in the tin, the colour seems to go uniform. When I decant a little into a cup, to thin down and add high gloss thinners, a yellow pigment appears on the surface of the cup and no matter how much I mix, stays.

I added to my gun and sprayed anyway. Where the inevitable heavy applications and runs are, the yellow appears...

Any suggestions?

thanks

It's not something I've ever experienced. It sounds like it might be a problem with the paint.

I'd give the supplier a call.

I've seen that type of separation with paint that has sat but never seen behaviour such as you describe where it separates so quickly that it is an issue when spraying. I would ask the supplier as Dave suggests. What sort of thinning ratio are you using though, maybe it's too high. All the celly I've sprayed I just thinned 50:50 as recommended by the manufacturer, none of this extra thinner for the final coats that some mention. I have a viscosity cup somewhere but found 50:50 worked well so didn't check the viscosity.

Thanks

Yes roughly 50:50 mix. I was told along time ago to aim for the viscosity of milk. Until now, this has been successful.

a good sprayer I once knew taught me to use 3 coats for celly:
1. colour coat, mix 75:25 paint to thinners (single cream)
2. depth coat, 50:50 (goldtop milk)
3. shine coat, 35:65 (fatfree milk)

With my HVLP, fat-free is the norm...although the last coat can be considerably thinner.

Dan I reckon the paint has a "bad" component in it

Take it back to the suplier and show him what happens

My local guy is a whiz at understanding such issues, yours is likely to be as good

Oh yers, top coat I found that a lovely shiny top coat only came about because I was running out and made the top coat thinners heavy, very heavy

Lovely shine with my HVLP Apollo
