MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Another Idiot question..

Hi all,
MK III RWA

It looks like the " drooped" part of the TOP grease nipple / lubricator on the nearside stub axle has vanished, just leaving the bit that actually threads into the stub axle body , so I need to replace the nipple. I 've got spares so that's no problem.
BUT can anyone suggest how I can do it - or do you have to remove the stub axle to do it?
said it was an idiotic question but for the life of me I can't see how to do it.
Cheers chaps

This should do it Colin, Screw Extractor Set, very handy bit of kit for your tool box, as you crew it into the nipple it should unsrew the nipple....easy!

Hi
I agree with Rob but be careful. A grease nipple shouldn't be seized in place too badly but it might be worth treating with Plus Gas or similar penetrating oil first. In my ham-fistedness I have managed to snap a couple of these 'easy outs' on well rusted bolts in the past. If it snaps off flush with nothing to get a grip on you're well and truly stuffed!

OR, this 2nd set, which drills it's own way (drill on reverse) into the damaged bolt or screw. £4.07 inc vat.

Anybody used these?

....or alternatively and providing there is anything of the nipple remaining which is proud of the stub axle body, find a very close fitting small nut and bolt and wind the bolt tight into the nipple. Wind the nut down tight - but not so tight as to dislodge the bolt - onto the remains of the nipple. Turn bolt ACW. Nipple may withdraw with the bolt. If nipple not hollow - drill it out a tad.....

I would be tempted to try finding a small file with a suitably sized tang to tap in there and try turning it out. The tang is usually soft enough to bend somewhat and if it breaks can be drilled out unlike easy outs as mentioned earlier. Personally I've never had an easy out work and have better ways these days.

One item I have seen recommended over easy outs many times are left handed drills as they will often catch and unscrew the problem. See http://www.tracytools.com/10-left-hand-drills-hs-various-sizes-from-1-16-tlo-3-8 .
