MG Midget and Sprite Technical - awkward

whats the easiest way to get to the awkward bolt on the clutch slave cylinder on a frogeye.
bob taylor

A 'cranked' ring spanner works for me.

Dave O'Neill 2

Open-ended spanner for my via the access hole in the footwell. When you come to put it back together, shorten the bolt so that it only has a couple of threads on it. Makes it a whole lot easier.
Simon Wood

Slot the upper flange as in the picture. Screw the bolt in by hand leaving it proud of the bellhousing only enough so that when the flange is slid in under it only a turn of the spanner is required to secure.

Alan Anstead

Consider fitting a remote bleed to simplify matters.

Alan Anstead

Those modifications are well worth doing, once you have the slave out. But access to an original and possibly tight one is tricky when it's already fitted in the car.

I found that if I lie under the car (raised up,secured etc, etc)I can reach with one hand where the the gap between the chassis rail and gearbox is widest, just in front of the rear gearbox mounting. I can then slide my forearm forwards along the top of the chassis rail and get a ring spanner (short, cranked) onto the upper bolt head and get a good pull on it. Left hand works better, although l am right handed. Something to do with the way one's wrist moves!
GuyW

car already has a remote bleed on it and yes i will slot the new slave cylinder. iv got a leak on mine and rather than try a kit id like to put new slave on.
thanks bob.

Bob

I posted exactly the same query about 2 or 3 months ago. Without the tip of the slotted slave, I dont think I would ever have been able to complete the job.
When bleeding, it is suggested you jack up the offside, as the slave isnt mounted parallel to the ground, so it helps if the exit to the bleed valve is at the highest point.

I'm feeling very nostalgic as today have sold my frogeye. I hope you guys will still allow me to pop in to your forum from time to time?

Hi Graham,
have you sold the Frog to buy the B then?

Do you also have another model(s) of MG?

And no you can't pop back here - only joking, I've not had a B for about 20 years I still go to those forums as you know.

Activity has picked up a little there and really dropped off here, I don't know why but do wonder, have all turned to Facebook or elsewhere(?).
Nigel Atkins

"Activity has dropped off here"
--- departure of the more controversial participants, Bob, Lawrence and then Prop, each in their own way. Each loved and loathed in equal measure but they certainly kept the pot of degreasant boiling.
GuyW

I was thinking more recently Guy, only my perception no facts or figures. I noticed a few weeks back that the B forums had dropped right off so threw in my two-pen'th there and then it seemed to drop off on the M&S forums too.
Nigel Atkins

there are lots of new Spridget owners joining facebook groups, mostly (but not all) with 1500s... and quite a few are youngsters.
David Smith

I can imagine that but as I practically never go Facebook I wouldn't see them. Many years ago I set up a Facebook account to promote the Bears but soon closed the account having putting up very few if any posts as lots of unknown and unassociated people wanted to befriend me(!) and I saw it wouldn't work as the promotional platform I wanted it to.

I could see that this type of old fashion Bulletin Board site might not attract new and younger members but a lot of former posters don't seem to appear any more surely they've not all sold their Spridgets, perhaps they migrated to Facebook and such places.

I'd imagine, but don't know, that MGOC and MGCC forums have a lot of activity.
Nigel Atkins

Graham V,
congratulations, I've just seen you bought a MG RV8.
Nigel Atkins

Quite agree Nigel.
I have recently now started using a facebook account solely for the purpose of following the MASC facebook messages but I find the "place" very remote and unfriendly. It doesn't generate the sort of banter and exchange of ideas, help and opinions that this BBS has always been so good at. And I am very cautious about the whole facebook Big Brother snooping thing!
It continually floods my inbox with long lists of people it thinks I ought to befriend. And despite for a long time posting nothing at all and zero details other than my name, it still manages to identify friends and relatives to link me too. I had also delayed posting messages or even "following" any groups for ages and yet it still clearly identified me as having an interest in cars, specifically Sprites. Maybe it doesn't matter, but I find this insiduous and intrusive. I do find it Awkward!
GuyW

The Facebook groups have their place, particularly for promoting events, meetings, sharing pictures, find other enthusiasts local to you etc.

But when it comes to technical discussions, the FB format doesn't work as well as a forum like this.

The knowledge from some of the more experienced members on this forum is really useful and appreciated, so please keep posting !

Guy,
my experience of FB was some years ago, can't remember how long though, even then I literally had a group of a hundred or so want to join me(!?). Mine was purely a personal account even though I only intended to use it to promote the Bears. Even then I found it difficult to edit and set the account up for my intentions only, a shop front to advertise and promote the club with perhaps a private backroom for those that didn't know me well enough to (try to?) communicate with me on the likes of FB.

I wouldn't worry too much about what FB does to snoop on you or not as you're exposed to the open world when posting here and when using your computer or mobile devices and it's far more likely that the likes of your bank, energy supplier, retailers, etc. will allow your information to be taken/stolen/hacked and used by others. The likes of the banks of course will blame you and say its your security at fault knowing full well it's theirs. With heritage/legacy systems or parts going back as far as some of our cars it's amazing that anything continues to work, like a single storey building with no real foundations having more and more storeys added to it hoping it won't topple - or a badly frayed and corroded thin earth wire just about keeping the electric item working on your classic, when will it finally fail.

A neighbour of mine has as little to do with "computers" as possible to keep their privacy thinking various agencies and companies swop information forgetting about the incompetencies of legitimate companies and IT in particular. The organisations that should be putting the information together can't - but the criminals find a away. Then of course there's the likes of Alexa, happy days. :)
Nigel Atkins

Chris,
there's also a bit of humour and banter here.
Nigel Atkins

Nigel

Thanks, yes I've bought the MG RV8. Mixed feelings about parting with the frogeye. Mine was not the best example, but all original and I liked it!

If you think this forum is getting smaller, you should see how the MGA forum is shrinking
Graham V

I wholeheartedly agree with Chris that this forum is much better than FB for discussing technical issues and swapping ideas.
I also agree that FB does have its place for more general dissemination of information about events.
