MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Beware of faulty laygears
I have been given back a new lay gear that is missing oil way drilling a. I have to check where it was bought, but suspect as usual that most suppliers are buying from the same manufacturer. I suggest you compare against the original parts before fitting a new one. Will report on the source as soon as I can work through the invoices, but am pretty sure it came from Moss Europe. |

Do you mean gear or shaft? |

I mean the laygear, most of the shafts we know are rubbish anyway |

I've had a look at a couple of laygears that I have in the garage, as I couldn't remember there being a drilling. I didn't find any drillings. Where is the drilling supposed to be? |

I don't recall any drilling either, but then it could just be me losing my marbles again! |

The only drillings I know of are two blind holes in the large gear end - they don't go any where. Probably indexing holes for use in hobbing / production etc ? R. |

I hate iPad autocorrect: It corrected my post to laygear when I had written layshaft, and I didn't notice. The Peter May LAYSHAFT I bought is the faulty bit, it is just a blank shaft with no drillings, so although it is hard enough it's not going to last any longer because there's no lubrication for the bearings! Been buying too many bits from too many places to keep rack at the moment! |
