MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Blanking off the by pass hose
What would happen if I fitted a later water pump with out the bypass hose boss and a later head without bypass fitting. What does the troublesome bypass hose actually do and what is it bypassing ? The t/stat has a hole in it so water can circulate, so what would happen? |

As long as you have a hole of say 6mm 1/4" in the termostat you will be ok. Peter |

Or 2 - 1/8th inch holes By not shutting off the heater valve tap and have continuely water flowing it helps to cool the #4 valve set up during summer esp because of poor air flow I removed my leaky shut off valve and put an elbow in its place and drained the water back to the rad..I had a connection installed just for that when I had the rad made Prop |

I run with by pass in the head welded up and no thermostat but with the blanking plate. All is fine. In the winter I partly cover the Rad to ensure it reaches normal operating temp. |

I have the "small hole in the 'stat" type of non-bypassing head, before I drilled the holes it tended to run awfully hot. Now it is fine. (I forgot to drill the hole in my new stat when I rebuilt the engine...oops) I run the Metro head and Metro type water pump set up, has never given me any trouble in ten years of running until I messed up with the new 'stat. |

""""I run the Metro head and Metro type water pump set up, has never given me any trouble in ten years of running until I messed up with the new 'stat"""" Exactly.... about 8 years ago I had teribble issues with my toyota truck and stats in winter time....it would over heat in the morning during winter...I went thur 5 stats, they only thing I could figure was when china took over all stat production they changed the wax formula so it took longer for the stat.to heat up...once it heated up, it was fine the rest of the day....thats when I learned of the drilled holes in the stat.face to keep from over heating....no issues scence Prop |

if you want to drill 1/8" holes you will need 4 of them to equal the area of one 1/4" circle (remember, the area of a circle is: pi * radius squared) Norm |
