MG Midget and Sprite Technical - boot lid split

has anyone ever come across this before the boot lid has split one the hinge mount. And do you think it would be possible to weld it without damaging paint on the outer skin.

I wonder if you ever had a boot rack fitted?
I know those hinges can become very stiff if not lubricated and given the mechanical leverage of opening and closing that would transfer a lot of stress to the hinges.

I very much doubt it could be welded without damaging the outside paintwork.

I agree that it’s likely the hinge could be tight, but I reckon it could be welded without damaging the paint on the outside, if you’re careful and do a small section at a time.

Would TIG welding do it without damaging the exterior paint?
C Mee

I wondered if laying it on a wet towel and doing single spot tig welds and cooling after each spot with a air line might do it .

LOL I guess my welding is more " nigh enough for pit work" than others!
GuyW

Yep. Definitely mig weld it.

The hinge plate is far enough away from the outer skin.

Go for it.

Worst case, you replace it.

But I would save it.

You should also check out the other end of the hinge where it bolts to the body. In my experience the body end comes off worst.
