MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Brake Pipe Bending Tool

I needed to fit some new brake pipes to my rear axle yesterday. The wheel cylinder on the MGB is level with the leaf spring, so the pipe needs quite a tight bend to avoid it.

I decided to invest in a pipe bending tool of some sort, so I was doing some research into the various types when I came across a home-made version on the mig-welding.co.uk website. It seemed like a neat idea, so I thought I'd give it a try.

It basically consists of some penny washers approximately the same thickness as the pipe, bolted between two pieces of steel, with a removable peg to hold the pipe.

I decided to refine the design slightly by grinding/filing a concave profile into the side of the washers to match (roughly) the profile of the pipe. This only needs to be over half of the circumference, approximately.

I used a chuck key for the peg, as there was one on the bench!

I was able to hold it in my hand when using it, but clamped it in the vice to practice on this old pipe.

Probably not cost effective, if you consider the time to make it, but very satisfying to do.

I would rather spend an afternoon in the garage then fighting my way through the sales traffic trying to get to Machine Mart.

Neat little device Dave. Now you need to paint it in a bright colour so you don't loose it amongst all the other bits of off-cut etc! ;-)

Larger pipe bending tools (plumbing) use a bit of bar with a concave groove along one side between your "peg" and the pipe to stop the peg adding a depression to the pipe. Avoids the point load. I guess the thinner and easier to bend brake pipe doesn't need it, though it would be an easy addition to slip something like a strip of wood in there.

That is nice... im stealing it

Im not a fan of the benders with built in flarings I can never make.the bends I want

What.I find best are the springs ... you put the pipe inside the spring and bend away then remove the spring

But I like your lttile tool

The problem with an external spring is that you can't use it once there is a nut on the pipe.

Here's a brightly painted 'special tool'.

I'm sure you can work out what it used to be.

In its new role, it was used to hold my Weber throttle open when compression testing.

It was painted yellow so it didn't get left behind when the bonnet was closed.

Looks more green to me, more like Kermits penis on an off day.
