MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Brake pipe flaring tools

I have one of the very cheap brake pipe flaring tools (see picture) I have had it for years and made countless flares with it but it is now getting a bit worn and I think I need to replace it.

I know this type get quite a lot of criticism for making poor flares although I haven't had much of a problem with it.

I once borrowed a professional Sykes-Pickavent turret styled one which was a dream to use compared to my putty one. Unfortunately I cannot afford to buy one of those myself!

What do others use?

What about this type?

I used the second type to make a full set, all perfect first time. Never having made brake pipes before, I found it easy to use on kunifer tubing. This one will only do 3/16" pipe, though, so no use for 1/4" if that is the size for your clutch (I bought a ready made for that).

What brand is the first one you showed? I have one (out on loan atm - thanks for the reminder) that looks similar but works beautifully. It's a Facom set.

Facom seems to do some nice kit. My oldest Allen keys are Facom and they're the best I have.

Street market stall brand! Actually its says A.O.K. Made in China. I think I paid £4.99 for it, that's what is written in biro on the box.

I have a set similar to the first one. It is made in the USA by Snap-On Tools and marketed under their Bluepoint brand name and aimed at the professional. They are only available from an authorized dealer who usually brings the truck to your shop once a week. Of course with the huge range of tools, he can't have everything but if it isn't on there you give him the number from the catalogue and it's there the next week.

I have had it for years, it's guaranteed forever and works just fine. Making a good flare in its own right takes practice but have not had one leak after installation using the tool.

I bought one from Machine Mart, but was less than impressed, so it went back.

I found the flares were often not concentric and it also marked the pipe where it gripped.

Now using an old, pre-owned Sykes Pickavant, which is brilliant.

Hi Guy. Currently using one like your second picture. Works well after a little trial, as I found it worked best with a little more pipe than t he instructions stated. Works for pipes in situ. A fount its good item for the price.

I too use the 2nd one, its fine for what it costs.
If you preferred to borrow it before making your mind up you are more than welcome.

Guy I have one of these (your second picture) and it works fine, I was quite surprised how well the flairs came out,it works well on all types of pipe material,if you want to have a look, you are welcome, don't forget I only live round the corner from you,

Thanks for the offer Andy, but I think I would rather buy my own in this instance.

I just know you are in Cumbria, but its a big county!

Guy

I used the same type as you with variable results.

Full brake pipe sets from Automec direct mail order - https://www.automec.co.uk - used to be great value, so have used those in the past for complete brake rebuilds on various old vehicles, but now I would be tempted to make my own again.

I reckon a secondhand Sykes Pickavant set would be great - I cannot stretch to any of these: https://www.automec.co.uk/collections/tools

Cheers
Mike

PS I remember when my long gone independent local motor factors would make up a brake pipe on spot for the cost of the components.

I just know you are in Cumbria, but its a big county! yes Guy, you are correct it is a big county, but as I said I only live round the corner from you, if you change your mind give me a shout
Andy Tilney

Lots of corners in Cumbria, Andy!

Don't worry I am not expecting you to declare your whereabouts online - If I do ever need to locate you I know that I could track you down!
GuyW

Guy, i have just taken delivery of the second BPFT you mentioned, and after a quick go on a bit of scrap 3/16 tube all looks to be straight forward to me.
One of those useful tools to have, albeit that hopefully it wont be called into use to often, not crazy about hydraulics.
Cost me £30 form flea bay if that's any guide to anyone
