MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Broken quarterlight hinge :(

Whilst trying to work out how I will fit the new seals I've just ordered, I've managed to snap off the top hinge on my driver's door quarterlight!
Any suggestions how I can re-attach it? Araldite? Rivet? Weld?
DOH!

And a pic of the broken hinge itself:

Could this be the solution?

You may be able to weld it, i'm not a expert however.

If you look at the 4th post here:

Is your hinge secured in a similar fashion? I know it's a MGB but it may be similar?

Also it looks like you can get a replacement hinge from SUSSEX CLASSIC MG CAR PARTS for about £5?

Saves a lot of faff!

Mine has broken in exactly the same way as in the 5th posting of your first link.
I had already checked Sussex Classics and noted the items in your second link but unfortunately, they are not the part that has broken!

Mine was broken similar from years ago. Andy Jennings had a complete frame so I went with that. Bit of a grovel getting it in and out but works just fine now.

As I understood it the frame materials vary and some are stainless. Fixing therefore more difficult.

JB Weld from local motor factors?

Howdy,

As Dave pointed out, the frames changed from chromed steel to stainless steel in 7/'72.

x2 to seek out a used one to replace yours

I might have a spare one.
Is it chrome or stainless ?

When mine went in the same place, I got a replacement hinge from MGOC I think, and riveted it on. I borrowed a rivet tool from my daughters school. A bit of a faff getting the old one out and stripped but worked ok.

Dave O'N - it is stainless. Do you have a spare hinge bracket or the whole opening pane?

Dave B - I hadn't realised I could buy just the bracket! I had checked my usual suppliers and they didn't list one but Moss have them available for just £2.95 so might well try a new one... Regarding the rivetting - is it straight-forward pop rivets or is it something more technical?

Meanwhile, I've ordered some JB Weld from Ebay for just a few quid and might try that also (thanks Alan A)

Thanks everyone

I replaced a broken pivot on a stainless steel frame many years ago. Buy the right rivets (available from same supplier as hinge?) and then use whatever combination of hammer, punches and a piece of brass or aluminium to support the rivet head - which is all but 'flat' rather than domed.

I'm trying to remember (it was about 23 years ago) but do you need to make sure the hidden ends of the rivets are finished fairly flat to avoid them fouling the glass and causing that to crack? And I seem to recall that you do need to remove the glass to replace the rivets, so buy a new glazing seal strip at the same time.

Good luck!

It is not a pop rivet, it is the old style. You need a small tool which has a concave resess in one end to shape the rivet head. You hammer the rivet head using the tool and hammer and as the dome forms it holds the rivet and two pieces of metal in place. It is quite simple but perhaps I have not explained it very well. I do not know where you can get the tool from.
Good luck.

Jonathan/Dave - thanks for your explanantion. I do understand exactly what you are both saying.
If my JB Weld effort fails (high chance?) then I will follow your advice re. Rivets!

Don#t bother with the JB Weld, it's good for some things, but it won't hold the hinge for long. Get a new one!
