MG Midget and Sprite Technical - By pass hose fitting thread size

Any body know what the thread size is on the cylinder head by-pass fitting. Want to blank mine off and need to find a blanking plug that fits.
R Mcknight

There was a blanking plug fitted to A+ Minis and Metros. The part no is 88G619.

Moss show an incorrect hex-headed plug under this part number, Minispares don't have anything with that part number, but Minisport have the correct description, but no image...

I'd be interested to know this as it will save me removing the one from my spare engine. One way to find out is check the thread on the bypass fitting. I'd expect it is 9/16 or 5/8 UNF but may be BSP.
Daniel Stapleton

IIRC it's the same thread as the temperature sender.
Dave O'Neill 2

It appears to be 5/8"-24

This is what the genuine Rover one looks like...

Dave O'Neill 2

For some stupid reason,I want to say its the same size as the spark plugs ...

oh yeah, you know I got kinky with it

Prop
Prop and the Blackhole Midget

IIRC it is an odd pitch thread, none of the standard taps fitted. I have two of the correct size because I forgot I already had one :-(
However, they are both at home and I'm in France till the end of the month so I can't slip out to the workshop & see what they are.
Paul Walbran

Yes, definitely the same size as the temp sender. I've just remembered that I fitted one to the radiator.

Dave O'Neill 2

That's interesting, temp sensor is 5/8 UNF, must be losing my marbles!
Paul Walbran

So Do we think its 5/8 unf ? Would this fit?

R Mcknight

Any more comments . So we think its 5/8 but is it UNF or BSP ?
R Mcknight

Sorry to stray from the point: why do you want to blank it off?
Nick and Cherry Scoop

Running a later water pump with no by-pass . Drilled a small hole in T/stat to allow water to by pass when stat shut. Its just about simplifying things , if its not there it cant go wrong.
R Mcknight

I do really want to know.
Nick and Cherry Scoop

I, heading home this week, if you haven't had a definite answer by then I'll dig out the tap I keep for the job and let you know.
Paul Walbran

That's weird. Your 27 Aug post not there earlier tonight.
Nick and Cherry Scoop

Found a spare head sitting around so took the temp gauge blanking plug from it . It will not screw into the by pass thread so it is NOT the same thread.
R Mcknight

I'm fairly sure the temp one is 5/8 UNF and the other is an odd one, othrwise I wouldn't have bothered buying an expensive ususual-thread tap. As I said, I'll check later this week as it's stashed secretly where it won't be misplaced by others. If I can remember where that is ... :-)
Paul Walbran

Bought the Minisport item and it fitted a treat . It is hex headed and not the same as the metro turbo that is tightened with a screw driver. Just be aware a lot of stockist say NLA.
