MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Camshaft End Float

My cam endfloat is 14 thou, where it should be 7 thou max. But am I right in thinking that the endfloat is directly related to the thickness of the oil pump gasket, and how much gloop you put on it?

It seems to me that it is, but I know I'm capable of massive misunderstanding, and subject to attacks of non-engineering brain.

The camshaft end float is controlled at the front end, by the camshaft retaining plate, and the camshaft sprocket.

If your following haynes manual... the spec is a misprint... sorry I dont recall what the true spec is, but I was cunfused by this also when building my engine....you might try the archives as this is mentioned several times

According to the BL workshop manual, a 948 has 003-007 thou" end float.

Thank you, Lawrence. So you put the sprocket on before measuring the end float.

That's not what Haynes says.

But anyway, I knew I was being dim.

If you where to control end float on the other side the pump you would risk putting pressure on the pump, this would wear the pumpgears in to the pump lid and swarf through the engine.

You do know that you mount the pump after the crank/rods/pistons, camshaft and timing gear.
Again to avoid damage to the pump

Thanks, Prop; it's good to know that others have followed Haynes and gone adrift. I knew in my heart that something was wrong - it would require incredible accuracy in the oil pump body, drive and the slot in the cam, to achieve .003 between front and back.

Having a few minutes to spare while I come in for coffee, I have looked in the archive for this question.

July 2003 has an exactly similar thread started by "Nick and Cherry Scoop". Eleven years since I rescued that 1275 engine, and I've learned nothing. Oh well.

Hi Nick we take the clearance down to 1-1.5 thou by machining the cam gear down.
