MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Carb problem

The front carb seems to have a crossthreaded jet adjustment nut that just wount budge. As i have found a HS2 refurbished on ebay for a morris minor at a good price would it be suitable to use as the front carb.

If not as it is then using the parts from the old carb and just using the body?

If not again then any other ideas for getting the nut out.

I dont think that would be a problem...just change the carb needle, dashpot spring, and the float chamber lid...and you should be ready to go

Aren't they handed? the float chambers are and the linkage is, the throttle adjuster is and IIRC the body to manifold bolts are.

My last moggie was in the 70's so can't remember which hand that carb is.

Not sure about parts interchange. Expect Guy would know.

Not quite sure what bit you think is cross threaded - if its the adjuster is it not easier just to buy the bits to replace it from Burlen fuel systems.

They have a good web site and you can identify all the bits and prices etc.

Very helpful if you phone also.

Part A on the image which screws into the body. which could mean the thread on the body could be damaged.

D Sartain

I would get the carb off the car and strip it and see if the thread is salvageable.
Once the jet tube holder is out of the way, it may be possible to use the old threaded part as a sort of tap - putting a light cut into the male thread can help as a chaser.

If O.K replace with new assembly as per your post.

Looks like these people stock some if not all of the parts.

2X richard boobier...thats definatly the way to go

penertating lube is your friend

carb is off the car and stripped all that is on the body of the carb is the throttle spindle with butteryfly and the nut as shown and tried penertrating oil with no luck.

seems odd as the front carb seems to of been serviced more recent than the rear als owith 2 gaskets on the float bowl.

>>seems odd as the front carb seems to of been serviced more recent than the rear als owith 2 gaskets on the float bowl.<,
possibly a repair rather than a service or new or s/h parts fitted
Nigel Atkins

As you have the carb fully stripped down, I would try some gentle heating with a propane blow lamp. With a crossed thread the differential expansion is likely to have better success than use of penetrating oil. Just don't overdo it - I am not sure what the melting point of the carb pot alloy is!

if its cross threaded... it may be worth while to go a head and get aggresive....the stuck parts are going to need to be replaced anyway

Do you know it is cross threaded because it looks crooked? Or, do you just think it is cross threaded because you haven't been able to get it out? I would go for the heat like Guy said. But, if it is just tight and not cross threaded, do you really have to remove it?

well the piston wouldnt move easily so would guess the jet wasn't centered correctly so does really need to come off. Il have another go tommorow
D Sartain

Right, I forgot about centering the jet.

sorted its off and the thread seems to be ok.
Happy!
D Sartain

Thats great news...

what was the binding issue...general corrosion in the threads?

prop
Prop and the Blackhole Midget

slightest being crossthreaded but mostly general corrosion.
D Sartain

Yepp.. that can have an effect

how does the ol girl run now

prop
Prop and the Blackhole Midget

waiting on a part for it so not back on yet.
its my first time taking them off and apart so taking it slow. JUst hope im not one of those kids that takes things apart and then cant put them together again.
D Sartain

I wouldnt worry or lose sleep...you will do fine

its the easist way to learn, and you have pleanty of friends here to help you out, should you get in a bind
