MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Carbies and header on before putting engine back

I have just picked up my engine from the mechanic after having new pistons, rings, bearings, etc installed.

I was wondering whether it is easier to put the replacement twin 1.5 SUs and the new header onto the engine before I put it into the engine bay. Which is the easier way to go about this - before or after?

I'm thinking I can get to all the various bolts etc with the engine removed, but how hard is it then to get the engine positioned correctly in the engine bay afterwards????

Wazza. A series, or 1500? I found that I had to remove the heater to get my LCB manifold back on with the engine in situ (A series), or you can put the header loosely in position before you install the engine. The inlet manifold, carbs etc all went on easy enough and you can get at all the nuts and bolts.
You're now going to tell me it's a 1500 aren't you? If it's a standard manifold I think you should still be able to fit everything after the engine is installed.

Sorry Bernie, it IS a 1500. At the moment the engine bay is completely naked - no heater, no nothing. Hopefully that will make it easier to fit it all in???

Photo is after I switched across the top of the footwells to convert from LHD to RHD.

I think you're probably right Wazza. The fact that the engine is going in first must make it easier, then the carbs etc will be easy to fit.

Fit engine without carbs or header!

Unless you are using the original exhaust that has a clamp in the engine bay.
With a tubilair manifold it is very hard to get it in mounted to the engine

That said, is it easier to access the lower manifold nuts on the UK-spec 1500s than it is on the US variety? Trying to get to those nuts with the engine in provides a very strong reminder that the factory installed the engines with most of the ancillaries already bolted on...

Best of luck,

As said with a std spec manifold it can be done due to the abcenss off the down pipe
