MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Check Strap Bolt
Bored of bodywork so started attacking my rear axle this morning. It is the only mechanical bit I have left to do. Five minutes in and I sheared one of the bolts that hold the check strap to the axle... Boo! Any bright ideas on repairs? Cheers, Malcolm |

Ive heard of a trick to remove sheared bolts but never tried it You weld a bolt over the top of the sheared off bolt...some how the heat and the molecular bonding will loosen the frozen sheared off bolt, and my understanding it will come out with little effort Prop |

I'm guessing that it sheared at the base of the threads? I have vague recollections of having welded the threaded portion of a bolt onto the remains of the broken pin. One way would be to cut a slot in the end of the pin, grind a bolt down so that it fits into the slot and then weld the two together. |

A bit like this...only prettier!

Yup, there is about half a thread left at the base of it. Smart idea that Dave, thanks. Just have to see if I can weld to the piece of rust that remains! :-D Malcolm. |

Hmmm....interseting pic The broken part is a male acting like a female and the new bolt is a female with a male peg on the end What are we talking about agian? Prop |

ha ha ha! Prop, you are hilarious! The little stubby bolt (bolt is probably incorrect term, but can't think what it would be called...) to which the check strap attaches to the axle. Next to the bump stop. Left, the one I buggered, right, how it should look. Malcolm ![]() |

Malcolm, I broke that on a B once. I had enough of the stud remaining that I just drilled a hole through it, slipped on a flat washer, and put a cotter pin through the hole I drilled to keep the flat washer in place. I forget what you call a cotter pin over there, but you probably know what I mean. The repair works because all the stress from the strap is in the other direction rather than against the nut. MGBs are a much easier fix, as there is a replacement pin available. It is welded directly to the back of the axle, rather than through a box section. |

I've just found a pic of my B axle with a broken pin.

Surely you've seen European rust before? We used to export it...in MGs. |
