MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Choke cable on frogeye
Hi I think I am being very stupid. I have reassembled my carbs, all fitted and working well..... until I connect the choke linkage up. Then, I find I cant pull the choke out from the knob in the car. It works if I lift the levers by hand from under the carbs, I just cant pull the knob from inside the car. I guess I have done something wrong with collar at the cable fitting, but not sure what! Should it be tight, or loose, or what? Help! Also I am left over with a small component but as it was so long ago I took them apart, I cant remember where it came from! Photo attached. Altho you cant see clearly in the photo, it has 2 hole in its shaft, one in the centre and one at the end.Could this be the problem with the cable? Thanks ![]() |

Hi Graham, That part looks like the trunnion for the throttle cable? Not an A-series owner, but had a Mini-Cooper with twin SU's in the 80's and well recall threading the throttle cable thro just such a fitting. You tighten the nut after threading the cable thro the hole and the second hole is for a split pin to retain the thing in the bellcrank. I'm sure someone will be along to confirm that or tell you wat it is if I'm wrong! |

Definitely a trunnion for a throttle cable. Have you a pic of your carbs? Rob |

Yes you are right. But I already have that on my throttle cable! Should there be one on choke cable too? If not, assume previous owner fitted in error. But my main problem is with the choke knob that wont pull the cable - any idea? Thanks Pic attached as requested ![]() |

Can't tell from the picture. Does the choke cable work when the inner is not connected to the choke operating levers? i.e. with it in the proper place but the screw that tightens the inner to the levers not tightened? Rob |

Is the choke knob in the locked position? As Rob said, disconnect the cable and see how free the choke cable is |

Hi Thanks for the responses. Really appreciate the help. It's not in the locked position. Bur I have found that if I loosen the nut on the collar at the top of the assembly, it works, perhaps not quite as smooth as it should, but it works. But then the collar is hanging loose of course, which can't be right. So the collar is, I guess, trapping the inner cable. Should the outer cable go inside the hole in the pin that sits inside the collar? Mine doesn't and I think something is jamming in that area. Thanks, Graham |

I think the outer cable should be in the hole and clamped in position when you tighten the nut.

is the cable oiled, might just be the last cm of the outer needs trimming. |

Hi Graham, I had a similar thing with the starter cable on my frogeye, it would sometimes get caught and not pull out at all. I also loose3ned the nut on the collar and it freed itself. I've left it like that so far as it still sits nicely in position. |

Thanks for the advice and everyone was right! The outer cable fits through the hole now I have discovered what was blocking it. And as Gary has said, I needed to leave the nut a little loose, as otherwise the inner cable is squeezed through the outer cable. Now working nicely, so thanks for the help Graham |
