MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Clicking noise

Hi All

Merry Christmas to everyone :) (A bit late I know)

Hope you all had a good one!

Yet another saga,

I recently had a new gearbox and clutch fitted.

Today took the car out and there is a noticeable clicking noise from the engine bay.

At idle I could not hear it, as soon as you start moving above 1500rpm it's really noticeable from inside the car in all gears at all speeds.

As soon as power is applied in gear the clicking is there. The car still pulls as expected and moves fine.

Am I right in thinking my new gearbox may have a issue? :(

Universal joint at gearbox end?
JB Anderson

Is it road or engine speed related?
Ray Rowsell

it is related to engine speed, the noise is most noticeable when the car is in gear.

The noise is there in neutral but is not as obvious.
R Williams

any difference if when you're stationary with the engine running you push the clutch pedal down?

have you checked inside the engine bay with the engine running at 1500 rpm?

noise travels but you heard it in the engine bay so it might not be g/box or clutch
Nigel Atkins

Engine mounting not tightened and causing fan to hit the shroud when engine under load ?
Andy Phillips (frankenfrog)

I have had a further listen / nose about with my dad.

I have a blowing exhaust.

At least its not fatal :)

Something else to solve by the end of January when the MOT is due!

It doesn't help that I am a perfectionist/paranoid :)

Rylan,
if the noise is from the engine bay then it could be the manifold gasket

in case you don't know you can get an MoT done up to a month before it is due making the next MoT up to 13 months
Nigel Atkins

Hi Nigel

Haven't heard anything from you in ages! Hope you're well.

My car recently had a new manifold gasket when I had my new gearbox fitted. I shall check the tightness tomorrow when the light is better.

I did know about the 13 month MOT. The current MOT runs out at the end of January 2014. If my car ever became MOT exempt I would still get it tested each year to ensure work I have done is to a required standard and to have another pair of eyes inspect the car :)

I am rather paranoid which doesn't help, every issue could be the worst possible result, rather than it being relatively simple :)

Rylan,
very well thanks, I'm sure you'll be surprise to know I don't like Xmas or the 'January sales' so am even more grumpy at this time of year

if you have a look in the Archives you'll find how to check for exhaust manifold leak without disturbing the manifold

unless you meant the exhaust leaks on the first joint (manifold to down pipe)

or I've got it wrong and you don't mean the clicking is from the exhaust and you have two separate faults

sometimes it's better to get an early MoT especially allowing for how bad the weather can be in January, personally I'd change the MoT to later in the year when the weather is much warmer and days much longer
Nigel Atkins

Rylan! You? Paranoid?

You have only been paranoid since you started believing everything was going wrong!
GraemeW (Kent!)

I do have a problem with thinking everything doesn't work :)

My diff is getting swapped on the 2nd January.

I also have a original metal radio console to fit at some point as well :)

I think my fear of broken things stems from my dad's dislike of bad engineering and BL!
