MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Cutting fibreglass

Hi , any recommendations on how to cut holes in a hardtop for side windows. I thought something like a Dremel with a disc ?

Mike Fairclough

Purpose blades for this utilising a jig saw.

Def wear a dust mask whatever you use! Ground glass dust is not good inside your lungs!
GuyW

echo what Guy says...but get a "proper" mask...any glass fibres in your lungs will be there for good and could cause harm long after the midget has gone...
David Cox

Fret saw?
Or if it's possible to manoeuvre the hardtop into position, one of these maybe? And there's £10 off and free delivery and useful for other projects! :)

Jeremy MkIII

Thanks for the ideas I will definitely wear a good mask and get well covered up .

When I cut windows into a F/G boat I used a jigsaw with the special blades - coated in tungstan carbite granules.

Be also very careful with the goggles - i still managed to get a fibre or two into my eyes - possibly dust after taking them off - caused a major problem by infecting a tear duct and required antibiotics after the lid swelled up and was full of nasty stuff when in finally burst !!!

I also was running a vacuum cleaner as well as the dust was falling into the hull below.

Cutting through 2-3 mm fiberglass is quickly and easily done with a regular hand held hacksaw blade. What would concern me more would be the sticky out appearance of the rubber seal. Glazing is inevitably recessed from the 'A' surface for this reason, and to prevent any additional wind rush. Having the seal sticking out is completely do able, but might look a bit caravanish. Consider also how you would join any cut angles. Superglue works, but to be seamless has to be a dead nuts fit, and ideally used in slight compression.

Thanks for the advice about the hacksaw blade might minimise the dust issue . As it’s for a race/sprint car I may not go for seals just rivet or button head screws the Perspex on the inside
Mike Fairclough

I used M4 button heads, with some clear silicon between the hardtop and the Perspex.

Yes just like that Dave , clear silicone a good idea . How did you get on cutting the Perspex sheet ?
Mike Fairclough

IIRC I used a bandsaw to cut the rear screen and a jigsaw for the side windows.
