MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Dashboard indicators
Hi , any ideas why they come on when indicating but don't "blink" . The exterior ones are blinking fine |

As yours is an early car, they should be coming off the third terminal on the flasher unit - assuming that your have the correct flasher unit and wiring. |

Thanks Dave I replaced the little round tin can flasher unit , it has 3 terminals and wiring is pretty original I'll go through the terminal connections and see if that helps |

Mike Is this what you have? ![]() |

Yeah it's one of those type , can't get to it at the moment to check connections , but it's the fact that they come on but don't flash has me confused |
Mike Fairclough |
Yeah ...sounds like a burned out flasher or a grounding issue...both are common problems |

When your say you replaced the flasher unit, was it a new 'green box' item? |
Dave O'Neill 2 |
I am afraid to say it was Dave, I should have learned from the new " Lucas" washer pump and indicator stalk that are rubbish and didn't work and the "Tudor " washer bottle that I had to replace the pick up to make it work . During this I have found cleaning up and using my old parts where I can has been the way to go . |

I have a collection of 3-pin flasher units, as yet untested. I must get around to testing them, or you could pop round and try one. |

I have had a better look now , all the connections seem fine and if I look carefully the dashboard indicators do dim slightly when the exterior ones are flashing . The exterior ones all work fine so I am wondering if it could be an earth on the dashboard as they appear to be on the same circuit as the exterior ones . I can't see a black wire to them so I assume it's just earthed directly to the metal dashboard . |
Mike Fairclough |
They wouldn't normally be on the same circuit unless you have a later wiring loom. An easy was to tell is to disconnect one of the external lamps to simulate a bulb failure - in the boot is easiest. IIRC a blown bulb on a 3-pin flasher should make the remaining bulb flash faster and the dash warning lamp flash once. |
