MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Dipstick
Starting to make real progress now on my rather long restoration journey!
However can I find my dipstick? No! I’ve turned the garage upside down but I’m now thinking it’s gone forever. Time to buy a new one…oh you can’t get new ones from any suppliers. So I need to buy a secondhand one which leads to some questions: 1. On Moss they have a different part code for each engine model. Is there a difference between the 948cc and 1098cc dipstick? 2. Does anyone have a spare they are willing to sell me? Thanks James ![]() ![]() |

Did some more internet searching and found a Morris Minor specialist who had a second hand one for a 1098 10cc on the shelf. Matched the part number. I’ll probably find my original one now! 🙄 |

Out of interest, James, can you measure from the underside of the collar to the full mark on the stick. I would like to check mine too! |

When it arrives on Friday I’ll let you know 🙂 |

This reminds me of the story about trucks made by Citroen for Germany during WW2. Citroen were not happy about being obliged to make vehicles for the enemy so allegedly they made the dipsticks longer, with the full mark set low on the stick so even when short of oil the dipsticks showed full. Not certain if this is true, but if it's not it should be! |

Sounds like he needs one of the Citroën dipsticks Roger!![]() |

Trent class LifeBoats have two MAN V10 engines (around 850hp IIRC) which are "staggered" in the engine room. Starboard is fitted facing forward and Port faces the other way with the shaft running under it. This necessitates the engines having different shaped sumps one being much shallower. So the two dipsticks are different and should never be out of their engines at the same time. This has led to.... Oh wait; you're ahead of me aren't you.... |

Seems it is true Roger. https://jalopnik.com/citroen-sabotaged-wartime-nazi-truck-production-in-a-si-1836670685 |

Ah, thanks for the confirmation. That sort of thing appeals to me, as long as it's not me that falls foul of it! |

Hi Guy, Looking at the measurement I’d say that is 19.8 cms just over 7 3/4 inch. Let me know if that matches yours Took a while to turn up, but cleaned up nicely on the polishing wheel. Thanks James ![]() ![]() |

James, under that "Rod--dipper 12G 175" with collar you'll also want a rubber washer - "AEC 671 Washer (rubber)". IIRC there's a thread in the Archive with the three dipstick sizes, IIRC(?) with a photo and details from David Smith. |
Nigel Atkins |
Thanks Nigel! The washer is still available thankfully |
James Paul |
Yes, whether the suppliers sell the right one, or as often happens a substitute, I don't know, I think it was Jeremey that put the (original?) washers are 4mm high. |
Nigel Atkins |
I have just used a standard tap washer. Worked fine for the last 30 years. |
GuyW |
Yes but if you get it wrong you could have trouble with engine breathing and HUUGGGGEEEE blue clouds! 🤣 🤣 🤣 |
Nigel Atkins |
I don't have a rubber washer, didn't know about it - how much does it matter? But then I've just discovered my rocker box lacks the stepped rubber washers (on order). |
