MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Driving me nuts
My Sprite is held together with a really random selection of nuts and bolts supplied by previous owners and the more work I do, the more anomalies I find!
Wherever possible I'm replacing with correct fasteners as per MGOC/Moss etc. catalogues. The inlet manifold is a case in point: Three standard fat nuts and one slim one. My Minor's carburettor is held on with slim nuts which I prefer as they make removing and refitting the carburettors that little bit easier. Which is correct for the Sprite, fat or thin? All the regular suppliers list GHF202 (3/8 inch UNF x 9/16 inch) which their images show as being fat and the same nut as used on the engine mounts. As I'd prefer to use thin nuts here if I can find some, can anyone suggest a possible supplier? I've already checked MGOC, Moss, ESM, Rimmer, Mini Sports and Mini spares which is down for maintenance. Colin ![]() |

Colin, thin - try FNZ106 NUT, HEX, ZINC, UNF, 3/8" from one one your farm (er - not got two helicopters to rub together) shops. I had to battle with thin nuts against the dashpot, how thick are your insulator block (21, 23mm?). |

Colin Namrick (and others) sell thinner 'Half Nuts' in UNF thread, select this on the drop menu on nut type: https://www.namrick.co.uk/acatalog/Home_U_N_F_Bolts___Nuts__15.html If you have the factory full worshop parts manual it lists the nut and bolt part numbers and elsewhere there is a list which deciphers the spec from this part number. Hope your rebuild is going well. Best wishes Mike |

They should be thin, half-nuts. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371116880227 |

PS Many of the parts numbers for nuts, bolts and studding are shared with other BMC/BL cars so available from Minispares etc. Cheers Mike |

Nigel They do tend to jam on the dashpot. It helps if you pull the carburettor away from the insulator, as you undo the nut. |

That was quick - Thanks Guys. I should have thought of Namrick but I'll check out the other links too. Many Thanks Colin PS - Nigel, you had me confused with the helicopter reference thinking you were suggesting getting in touch with the neighbours! We live next to an MoD training ground where training helicopters from RAF Shawbury are for ever hovering and buzzing the house when the mood takes them! |

Dave, I did thanks, I am now fairly experienced in the removal, or partial removal, and refitting of the carbs! not that I wanted to be. Colin, I was being rushed at my previous post and now I can't find that part number (from a paper reprint of the 1977 factory Parts Catalogue) FNZ106 but it is 3/8" UNF (IIRC). |

Colin I may have some in my garage - I can check tomorrow if you wish? Cheers Mike |

That's a very kind offer Mike. Please don't be offended if I decline. I've been on the Namrick site and decided to put together an order to lay in a stock of some of the other regular nuts and bolts to have to hand when I need them. Cheers Colin |

Colin Not offended at all. In addition to a special order of half nuts and any other specials, Namrick mixed bag of UNF nuts, bolts and sets screws is quite handy as well as their mixed bag of imperial plain washers (cannot remember if the washers are included in the first bag) as well a mixed bag of imperial split washers. Best wishes Mike |

Namric is brilliant. He was a classic car restorer and couldn’t always source the fixings he needed and ended up starting his own shop - knows what he’s talking about |
