MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Engine mounts (rubber)

With the engine out I have the opportunity to replace the mounts with new. The transmission ones were perished so will replace. However the main engine mount rubber looks quite good. But I don’t know how old they are, i’m guessing 5 years or possibly more.

Replace anyway? Or reuse?
What are your thoughts?
C MADGE

I'd reuse them, assuming they weren't giving trouble before. As long as the engine was properly located and not moving excessively I imagine they will be fine. Also modern replacement mounts seem to be one of those things that have deteriorated in quality, from what people have written here and elsewhere.
Five years isn't old for decent mounts anyway. The ones I took out of Don's Triumph are okay and are probably original 1972. They'll be going back where I found them.

Check them first by heaving on the rubber to see if they are coming away from the steel outer plates. If not then re-use as they will be a million times better than modern repro carp.
David Smith

As with most things made from rubber, modern replacements are likely to be poor quality and deteriorate very quickly.

The other recent complaint about replacement engine mounts is that they transmit vibration through the car.

As others have said, if they appear to be serviceable, then re-use them.

I was thinking of using existing engine and gearbox mounts when I rebuild because of this problem with modern rubber parts.

Is it a 1275 or 1500, I forget.

On my 1500 I modified the steel mounting bracket to accept a large bobbin type mount. Something like 50 or 60mm diameter x 20mm deep.

These can then be bought from "proper" industrial suppliers and are therefore made of decent rubber, they are also cheaper as they are a simpler part. I have not noticed any performance difference in terms of vibration etc.

Its a 1500.

On closer inspection the rubber is starting to come away from the metal in places, so I think its better to replace.

The bobbin mount idea is interesting, I'll investigate...

I had not noticed that mine had gone until the air intake box stated to catch on the side of the engine bay
