MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Exhaust fitting

Chaps

I now have my shiny green Maniflow 1 5/8 single box trial fitted up. Couple of Qs....

Firstly, the car is on axle stands at the rear, wheels about 2 inches off the ground. The rear end of the pipe leading into the box touches the underside of the brake actuating arms - despite trying out several permutations of box mounting and pipe orientation. However, I guess this clearance will increase once the car is on the ground.....so, does it matter?

Secondly, the pipes/box interface is a good fit and about 2 inches in length - what say you all to using exhaust paste as an extra sealant?

Cheers

Unless you drive over hump-back bridges at 70 mph and leave the ground you should never reach maximum droop on the rear suspension, so no problem.
No exhaust paste necessary, and you will be thankful should you ever need to take it apart.

Precisely what I was thinking...my only concern was indeed the rebound from over-enthusiastic driving/potholes etc. Quite right about taking the thing apart - the old system was bad enough with no paste used.

With regard to sealing joints, I was told by an old guy years ago to use red hermatite and just heat it a bit before removing and it will come apart easily. It has always worked for me ever since.

It might matter depending on how keen your Mot man is.

I can assure you my MoT guy is sympathetic to those of us who keep the flame alive. He is though a deeply misguided individual who admires old Ford Escorts....

The fit is actually quite tight, and the clamps supplied look pretty robust. I guess if someone moans, I can unclamp, disassemble and paste away.

As an aside, is there any requirement to adjust the mix - or anything else - after fitting it?
Mark O

Ah, a friendly MOT person, excellent. Mine also doesn't mind that my axle clonks my exhaust on full droop either.

Technically you should re-needle slightly richer. Though with just the silencer I reckon you'll be OK.

Yes, my thoughts also. I have a HIF44, Metro head - larger inlets, Kent sports cam, LCB, 123 ignition, decent coil and leads. Presently I have a BDK needle fitted and was toying with the idea of a BBC....

I used to have an engine spec much as yours and a BDL needle (standard MG Metro) proved best on a rolling road (tried lots of others on an ad hoc basis but the BDL was the best surprisingly).
Chris Hasluck

If you want a free BDL needle, I have a few lying in the needle draw, yours for the cost of postage.

I am in Thailand till mid January, so drop me a note then as a reminder if you are interested

My reasoning for going a little thinner on the needle front is that it seems I am getting awfully close to maxing out the mixture screw - i.e. fully wound in - when following the SU manual for mixture adjustment.

I am wondering if this is a sign I need a thinner profile needle, and if not, then what is?
Mark O

Check that the needle is properly mounted on the piston. If the ferrule is not flush with the bottom of the piston, you need to adjust it so it is.
