MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Exhaust silencer skid plate
Does anyone make exhaust silencer skid plates (years ago you could buy them)? Or do I have to make my own? |

What is that Daniel? I'm not familiar with that. |

In the 1970s onwards rally cars used to have a skid plate on the exhaust silencer box. It took the form of being a piece of metal in an almost triangular shape but curved rather than flat, where the base of the triangle was welded to the end of the silencer box section and the pointed end welded to where the pipe entered the silencer box. The idea was that if the car and thus the exhaust silencer had a rock or whatever (kerb) the silencer slid over the obstacle rather than be dead-stopped and forced off the system pipe.
Some companies sold exhausts for popular home-built rally cars (the Mini). While I think at one point you could buy a set of suitable shaped plates and weld them onto your car's exhaust silencer yourself. I've bought a square of steel from ebay now so will be making one myself. |

My Maniflow system came with one as standard. I'm sure they would sell you suitable parts. |

Ah right. Good idea. |

They're also a good idea if the exhaust hasn't got a lot of support to stop the pipes cracking out of the silencer. |

If you went to an exhaust place and bought a cone with the small end the same size as your pipe and cut it in half lengthwise you'd have one for both ends of the silencer. |
