MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Fitting an HIF44 to 1275

I am starting to collect items to fit an HIF44 carb to my 1275 engined IOW Fogeye.

I have a Sprite Maniflow manifold and the carb is on its way as well as a heat shield, spacer and gaskets, longer choke and accelerator cables.

What nuts and bolts do I need for the carb to manifold, and are there any suggestions about manifold nuts. Also what accelerator cable return springs does the carb need?

If anyone has fitted this set up to an IOW Frog, where there any clearance issues.

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

best regards,
Nick

I just used standard 1/2 inch machine screws for the manifold to carb bolts, cut to the right length with a hacksaw. Manifold nuts are the standard Brass ones. The carb has the throttle return spring built in so you don't need any more although you'll probably find the pedal a bit 'light' till you get used to it. Do you have the correct 'w' clip for the top of the heatshield for the choke cable?

Get six of these:

Makes fitting a lot easier and they cover all the stud so no corrosion when it comes to removal.

You might also need some form of stepped washer if the inlet and exhaust manifold flanges are different thicknesses. I used the big thick standard (1" dia?) washers and filed a step on them.

There is an article on the Black Country MG Owners website that tells you all you need to know. Go to:

Anything not in that article, just ask.

Remember you will need to modify the accelerator pedal to get full throw on the butterfly. I found this was easy to achieve by removing the organ pedal flat plate, leaving the lever in place. Bend the angle of the lever which remains to change its "throw". You can bold a short section of T-section steel onto the existing flat at its tip and fit a standard pedal rubber.

Many thanks for all your advice. Will continue to collect items. Great article Chris.

Hey chris

There is something wrong with your website, its only partially there... cuts off in mid sentance on big brake upgrade

Re modifying the accelerator pedal, I have the standard unmodified organ pedal and don't have any trouble taking the revs into the red. I did change to a mini accelerator cable as it has the correct fittings at the carb end.

Depending on which version of the carb you have - you can also "fix" both the light pedal, and ensure you get full throttle by moving the point at which the throttle cable attaches to the throttle spindle crank.

Dean Smith ('73 RWA)

As the cable fits at the outermost end of the pedal arm, I'm not sure that moving the attachment point will improve matters as that is where the greatest "throw" will be.
It's all easy to check by wedging the pedal down and seeing whether the butterfly still has more movement available (engine off of course!).
On mine the only solution was to bin the organ pedal and bend the arm so at rest the free end where your foot goes is a little higher and so has more travel before it hits the bulkhead.
