MG Midget and Sprite Technical - flexible oil pressure pipe

tonight i Found that the piece of flexible oil pressure pipe to the gauge is leaking slightly, as I need the car on Sunday i was wondering if i could replace it with apiece of old front brake hose i have lying around will it be ok with oil and the pressure , until i can get some of the proper replacement pipe .

I don't know for sure but wouldn't the brake line I.D. be bigger than the original line. I would check that first. Otherwise, I don't see why it shouldn't work as a stop-gap solution. Brake lines probably take more pressure than the oil line.

I'm sure others will have different opinions. :-)

It ought to do the job, I would think, as long as the ID is compatible, as Martin suggested.

I have dissected a brake hose, in the past, and the ID is quite small, but I couldn’t say offhand if it’s the same.

Brakes routinely operate at 400psi or often a lot higher, so a brake hose would cope well enough with oil pressure of 70 - 80 psi.

I once did an emergency - get you home - repair on a fractured oil pressure guage pipe for someone by inserting a piece of plastic cut from a bottle top under the tube nut that connects the pipe to the block. It sealed perfectly and although he had no pressure showing on the guage, the temporary fix got the owner home without problems.

Another temporary fix is to put a small ball bearing - assuming that you have one with you - under the tube nut.

I think I read that in a very old edition of Car Mechanics magazine.

I think i will get one of these

but not sure as i think on the 1500 engine the adaptor end has a cone fitting.

Mark..my 1275 has a fitting in the block to which I attach a short piece of 1/8 " ID rubber tubing. This has internal fabric reinforcement and seems to do the job. Difficult bit is getting a good seal onto the metal pipe going to the guage.. good quality hose clip needed there. Dave

I use thin internal bore rubber pipe to join the sections of my pipe

A couple of twists of gardener's thin wire has acted as a closure perfectly

Wrapround and twist close the two end pieces nice and snugly
