MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Frogeye brakes-correct?
| Just rebuilding my rear hubs and rather stupidly I didn't take any pics of the brake shoe set up! After searching the web for several hours, I found one drawing that was vaguely helpful. So can anybody confirm that the way I have them set up in the pic below is correct? Graham.

The bare-metal part of the shoe should be on the leading edge so with quick glance that makes it passener side. A
Anthony Cutler
Anthony, you are correct it is the near side (LHS looking forward). I'm 95% sure I have the shoes in the correct way round because of the ends, curved ends go onto the cylinder and flatter ends onto the abutment, the top shoe has a notch that fits onto the adjuster. It is actually the spring positions that concern me, is it correct for the double coil spring to be at the front and the single coil one at the rear, fitting into those holes? Graham.

you might find it on the John Twist videos - http://www.youtube.com/user/Universitymotorsltd#g/u

Didn't look at the springs! I would think the spring with the plain wire section should be on the other side, ie. next to the slave-cyl... it gives additional clearance... A

I've taken a couple more pics, just laying out the parts in what might be the correct position, this is A.

| and this is B. Which is correct ???? Graham.

B is close but maybe if the spring with the plain centre is reversed end-to-end I think you will have more clearance for the slave cyl?
David Smith
Thanks David, that is my preferred option as the springs do fit more easily, Graham.

This is a very helpful diagram for the rear brakes that I came across last week: http://www.mgexperience.net/phorum/file.php?3,file=131997,filename=Rear_Brake_Assembly.pdf Hope it helps!
Andrew F
Unfortunately Andrew, that is for the later system and is not applicable to the frogete. Graham.
Graham P
Oops, sorry!
Andrew F
Those Frog shoes don't appear to have a leading edge. Oh, that doesn't make sense! Of course they have a leading edge!! What I mean is that the lining isn't biased on the shoe to give a longer bit of exposed metal at one end. Or is that just how Frog shoes are?
Guy
Dunno if it's normal Guy, but that's how mine are and they certainly worked OK, went through three MOTs before stripping down. Graham.
