MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Gan6 Fuel tank pick up pipe

Removed the fuel tank from my 1500 yesterday, the pipe had long since disappeared and the brass pick up pipe connection was so deteriorated it disintegrated under the spanner leaving a flush brass plug in the tank.

As the tank itself is in remarkably good condition is there any way of repairing/replacing the pipe and/or pick up, assuming drilling and tapping doesn't work?
J Richardson

Ditch the tank.
I may look good from the outside but if the fittings deteriorated that mutch than the pickup pipe in the tank can't have a lot of life left.
And it is one of the most irritating problems when it breaks.
As all wil be fine when fuel level is above the break and all problems can start when fuel level is under the break (including a seised engine...)

The tank is perfect inside and out so I have no intention of forking out £120 on a new one except as a last resort, if there isn't a known repair or kit I'll just get the basic bits and make it up myself, built enough race tanks to be able to fit a new pick up, just thought I'd ask first.

Id check with moss, or ebay would be a good source as well,

but from my experiance, this system is very parochial in its design, id think the fittings and tubing can be easily sourced tho maybe not factory exact at most general plumbing hardware stores. The little filter on the end of the pipe work is nylon in my tank so should be reusable, or maybe a normal common fuel filter could be added outside of the tank instead of inside to capture the bad big debrie...if not avialable thur moss or one of its cousins

J. Richardson,

I take issue with your tone in your response... if I misintrupted this then please omit and trash can my following comment.

I would have given the same advice as im sure "almost" everyone else who responds to these postings would have done....its fair to say that if the pipe work had deteriorated to that level that you discribed, then the inside would by its very nature be in bad condition as well....i am glad that your tank is in good condition ....but we can only offer our opinion on what the author of the thread provides us....you did not mention the inside was in good shape...other wise im sure the response from Onno would have been differant.

Well I'm sorry you don't like my tone????

Quite what was in there to cause offence I'm not really sure.

However, if everyone would suggest that a leaking fuel pick up will cause an engine sieze up I'm obviously in the wrong place and will remove myself immediately......
J Richardson

I don't know what could have caused offence, either.

Also baffled by the possibility of a seized engine.

Please accept my apologies for reading more into this then was actually there...thats the fun of written only communication.

pick up pipe broken causing lean mixture leading to a hot nr 4 (heater tap closed did not help) and it seized.

Add to that the multitude of parts changed in order to find the cure for the holding back issue....

But if it looks good apart from the connection drilling and taping is the way to go.
Should not be to difficult just don't know what the thread is
