MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Handbrake lever renovation

When I renovated the Frogeye, the handbrake lever pivot was seized and took some freeing up. Apart from de-rusting and cleaning the mechanism and having the handle re-chromed I didn't attend to any "slop". Although it works it has become rather loose and the two slotted screws will not tighten but just turn. I've forgotten how these screws attach internally within the tunnel mounted bracket - could someone please remind me and suggest how I could get it apart? The front bolt which attaches the bracket is hidden currently so cannot be removed.
Bill B

Captive nuts inside the tunnel, Bill?
No longer captive?

ISTR that to properly access the front screw you need to disconnect the handbrake cable at the rear axle so that you can pull the handle right up high and clear the screw head.
GuyW

Thanks Guy but I mean the 2 screws that secure the ratchet teeth to the bracket. I think there are probably nuts which aren't captive but maybe should be as the ratchet teeth are somewhat loose.

Disconnecting the cable makes sense - bit of a faff then....
Bill B

Ah, I think there are nuts on the reverse side of the bent metal supporting plate. I know I removed mine to weld the nuts and also weld up a crack which had developed un that plate.
GuyW

OK, thanks. I'll remove the bracket/ plate and investigate then.
Bill B

Looks like your captive nuts may have done a runner Bill 😕!

Jeremy MkIII

Looks that way Jeremy! Bit of welding needed.
