MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Hood frame fitting

just fitted hood frame and i think the frame is to close to the top of the door frame see pic or is this correct as have never had it fitted before car came with it not fitted

mark (1977 1500 Midget) Preston Lancs

Its a bit of a too close up pic for me to see proper Mark.

However, does the cover fit the studs? and will it pull forward and clip on the top of the wind screen frame? If it does and the doors fit OK then the frame is probably about right. If there are some rucks in the cover, and no header seal, or it doesn't cover the frame properly then plan carefully before making changes to the cover. (its expensive to buy). My PO re located studs etc on the car and cover on mine and now my other covers don't fit the same studs - just great :-(

So before you go further and re trim bits it would be a good idea to explain on here and get some advice off here. Gryf from the USA is very good with hoods if he happens by. He fitted a cover that looks brilliant and explained how. You may find the thread in the archive I think its in the last 3 years he did it.
Dave Squire (1500)

not fitted hood yet just wanted to get frame on right first before i attempt to fit the new hood ,waiting for warmer weather . I put some card in the gap to help show it .

I don't see any problem.
David Smith

Next question do i go with velcro or extra tenax fastener and where dose the fastner go for the front ends of the hood cover on the door pillar
mark (1977 1500 Midget) Preston Lancs

Factory switched from Tenax to velcro for the B pillar fixing for a good reason, so I'd use velcro
David Smith

Dont see that reason they went to velcro, I switched to tenax and am pleased with it.
Arie de Best

if the hood shrinks it's at that point where it's most noticable, then either the tenax won't fit and the corner just flaps around, or people forced it and damaged the hood...
David Smith

I am looking for a picture of the top part of the b post to find out where the press stud fits for the hood cover on a 1500.
mark (1977 1500 Midget) Preston Lancs

don't think it does, shouldn't it have velcro same as the hood itself?
David Smith

it is the one on the inside of the door pillar
mark (1977 1500 Midget) Preston Lancs

There is a very good reason why the switch was made from tenax to velcro,if you lower the hood and forget to pop the tenax you can split the hood.Dont ask me how I know!
IAN WILSON

It is the inside of the B post opposite side to the velcro where the hood cover clips on I am after the measurements so i can fit them .
mark (1977 1500 Midget) Preston Lancs

There should be a hole where it was attached.

Has the vinyl on the B-post been replaced?
Dave O'Neill2

yes and i cant find any holes I think PO fit new B posts
mark (1977 1500 Midget) Preston Lancs

I don't think there ever was a stud on the INSIDE of the B post. Why would there be? Both cover and hood go over the B post and fasten to the outside.

That hinge bracket looks about right. They fit quite snug up against the back of the chrome finisher on the B post.
Guy W

Sorry, l was confused with the talk of Tennax studs. You were asking about the popper that secures the front corner flap about 3 inches down the post.
Why not fit the cover and use this to determine where to position the popper ?
Guy W

Mark,
I don't use mine as the hood cover doesn't fit proper because of additional seatbelt brackets

but I went to measure for and found mine are missing, sorry

I suggest following Guy's advice but don't make the fit too tight to allow for winter use as I obviously don't use it it shows the flaps tucks behind there without problem (for me at least)
Nigel Atkins

The popper on mine is 2 1/4" vertically down from the top surface of the chrome finisher, and 1/2" in from the rear face of the B post. Mine is a 1275, but I think its the same as the 1500 I had previously. Its the same hood cover because I kept it when I changed cars.
Guy W

Thanks I will have to dig out the cover its been away for the last 7 years in the attic nearly ready for the road.
mark (1977 1500 Midget) Preston Lancs

going to buy a Full Tonneau Cover for a 1500 and i believe that i need to fit 2 lift the dot posts behind the seats somewhere for when its folded back what i need is pic or measurements of where to fit them as it may be easier before i fit the seats tomorrow
mark (1977 1500 Midget) Preston Lancs

Why does vynyl shrink anyway?

"Vinyl of any kind is made with plastics. Over time the loss of plasticizers make the vinyl shrink and gaps will be seen. This is also the reason sheet vinyl curls at the edges. The top plastic layer shrinks, and the backing doesn't, so it curls."

Is there no way around this?

Lawrence Slater
