MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Horn connection

Second electrical question of the day - hopefully this one not so obvious to answer by myself....

I hope to re-instate the use of a horn button on my steering wheel. A PO had cut the wiring feeding the steering wheel and routed the connection via a pushbutton on the dash. This has never felt natural to me and on occasions where I have need to use the horn in a rush, I never seem to find it in time!

I've bought a second hand aftermarket wheel that has a centre horn push and earthing connection via a brass contact ring. However, when I took my old (also after market) wheel off the column, I was surprised to find the connection as shown in the attached pic. This does not reach the brass ring on the back of the wheel boss and I presume there is something missing?

I've checked the Moss catalogue and I believe I should have part no. 37H8051 fitted in this position? Can someone confirm that if I bought that part ( described as "clamp, switch, with contact") then I would have all that I need?

Thanks

Glynn

The sprung brass contact peice is missing, yes.
Buying a new one (or better yet, sourcing a good used one) should restore horn operation...provided the rest of the wiring is also functioning.

Whatever you do to get a contact there, the best upgrade you can do is a relay for the current to the horn. It pulls quite a lot, and the tenuous path through the horn push/brass ring etc. doesn't hack it, in my experience.

Not original, of course.

Had a bit of a fright when my usual favourites for parts say not in stock! BUT just placed an order with AH spares, Warks for this contact/spring thing :)
Just hope they don't come back to me to say they out of stock...

Thanks all for you guidance

Part number 37H8051

Wasn't on Sprites was it? I doubt AH spares will have it.

This is what it looks like complete.

That part seems to be NLA in the uk.

Here's one on Ebay.

Lawrence - you're right, as usual! AH spares do NOT have one, even though they acknowledged my order last night??? They rang me this morning to tell me the bad news.

I'd already seen that Ebay listing - it's in the US and works out at around £36, delivered.

I'm now looking for a secondhand one but also contemplating how I can make one myself....

Latest position - MOSS have just accepted an order for one! I stumbled across a US part number whilst trawling the interweb, apparently for MG Bs but an exact copy of the Midget part. Entered the US number into Moss's website and bingo!

Just waiting now for the phone call tomorrow to tell me they not in stock....

(by the way, £15 plus postage - MG Centre Wrexham wanted £20 for a used one, although to be fair(!), that included postage)

Sometimes used ones are better than new. I went through 3 new indicator flasher units in as many months before getting hold of a couple of used ones. I've only used the one so far and that's about 4 years ago.
