MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Hub nut torque in a book

Hello
Have just got restoring sprites and midgets an enthusiasts guide by grahame bristow ,. And on page 57 it shows a torque setting

Kevin Stevens

Amazing - two mistakes on the same page!

Graeme W

Actually, to be fair, the nut figure might be right but it doesn't seem to be recorded anywhere else. That has been the topic of most previous discussions.

Graeme W

Renovating rear axel at moment , seen the other post on torque settings. Just looking to get it right, ☺ my first big restoration ,
Kevin Stevens

That section of Bristow's book caused me confusion in the last week or so which is why I asked for confirmation on this BB as to which thread was on the left hub nut - it's left hand thread on the left and not as Bristow states RH!!!
Chris Hasluck

Good and tight is what I go for.
Pete Ottewell

'Ere we go then. Anyone for 140lbft? ;).
Lawrence Slater

3 mistakes on the page!
he says to retain the halfshaft with 'screws' whereas we all know there is only one :-)
David Smith

THree! Missed that one David despite a recent discussion here on exactly that point.
I had that book once. On the previous page he explains how he spent a lot of time and effort trying to undo the left handed thread thinking it was a conventional one. Are we suprised? Apparently he managed (presumably at 46 ft lbs)

Lawrence: you will never get 140 with your stilsons!

Kevin: if you haven't already (apologies if you have)come along to Kent Midget and Sprite Club meeting. You will get the right advice.
Graeme W

Ah, but I have my home made tool now. Not that I favour the 140 figure anyway. I'm a 'sodding tight' follower, if you get my drift. Money and nuts. lol.

Stilsons or home made, they both do the job, but you won't find it in books. lol

Lawrence Slater

Thanks for the invite saw alan and the midget boys at the dover transport museum on there jolly ☺☺,,,
Think rather tight will do for the hub nuts ,, as for stilsons they tend to crush and chew nuts up ,,so a home made spanner for me
Kevin Stevens

I used my stilsons for circa 35 years, before I made the tool last year. I've still got the same -- uncrushed nuts on my Sprite hubs.

You can always buy the correct sized socket though if your worried. I think they're about 15 quid.
Lawrence Slater

I thought the issue with spridgets was bad enough..... until I got an MGA. Left hand/right hand thread is one thing, but nuts with 8 flats!
Graeme W

yep - some apprentice in the drawing office took the octagon too seriously!
David Smith

Graeme

It is possible to modify a Spridget rear hub socket to fit the MGA and early MGB by removing every third peak.

If you also machine the face of the socket to remove the bevel, it works much better.

Dave O'Neill.......

Brilliant!

Have a cigar! What a neat solution.
