MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Identifying 8' brakes

Whilst rummaging I have come across some parts that I had forgotten I had.
As one does.
They are a pair of 8" drum brakes, (not 8 foot!), twin leading shoe, two cylinders per backplate. 4 bolt holes to axle. I think that they may be the 1.5 Riley items but can someone confirm? The drum has MOWOG and ATA7154V2 markings.
Guy W

Could have been 8 feet drums, if if you ever worked for nassa and obtained the brakes from the the 2700-ton Crawler-Transporter.

;)

Other than that, I can't find any googled links to riley brake drums, other than this 228mm is about 8".
And these brake shoes for sale.

Riley 1.5's had 8" brakes with Girling cylinders as opposed to Wolseley which had Lockheed. Later 1098cc Minors and A40's had 8" brakes too again with Lockheed cylinders. The answer would seem that if they are Girling cylinders its a Riley item. lockheed could point to a number of possibilities......!

Nothing on any of the parts, backplates, drums, shoes or cylinders, to say if they are Girling or Lockheed. They have snail adjusters, but then I would guess that was standard. Shoes have different holes to the illustration you posted Lawrence, but maybe that was just indicative rather than the actual shoes. (£240 !! )

Just wondered what they were off and if they are worth anything. I would have got them with the intention of fitting onto the rear of my Sprite I guess, but just never got round to it.

Have a look at Daniels book, page 128, there are pictures and diagram of the wolsely 1500 brakes.
Andy Phillips (frankenfrog)

the Riley brakes have wider shoes than M1000 hence their use on the back of Sebrings...

Thanks all.
I have now concluded that what I have are front drum brakes! I should have realised straight away as they are twin leading shoe brakes - so have two cylinders per backplate, neither of which is of the handbrake variety!

Oh well!!
Guy W

If they are Lockheed twin leading shoe and 8" diameter they could be from the 1098 engined Minor or A40 Farina. Both Wolseley 1500 and Riley used 9" front brakes, with the Riley using Girling with smaller cylinder bores and wider shoes than the Wolesley.
Richard Wale

Minor or Farina front brakes it is then.
Can't think they would be much use to anyone now.
Guy W

If someone has an a40 or moggie they might disagree:-) I'd stick em on the bay they would probably sell.
