MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Idiots guide ( again)

Hi all,
1275 Mk III RWA
I reckon I have a little play in my front bearings and , as I'm an idiot, I will almost certainly replace the stub axles rather than just the bearings, as I'm not sure I understand enough about the bearings.

My question is , when replacing a stub axle ,is it just unbolt old one, thoroughly grease up new one & rebolt up?......or ,like most MG procedures, are there some horrors I have not considered?
any hints / tips appreciated!

Cheers

Whichever nightmare you choose Colin you will need to remove the brake calipers, undo the hub nuts and get very mucky

If you replace the stub axles you have to take out the kingpins

And the shims

And prepare for a whole new bed of pain, bottom trunnion agony springs to mind off hand

I reckon you should follow the newly discovered path to righteousness by getting the new bearing sets from Meditech as advised on countless threads round here lately

Haynes even gets it near enough right too when replacing the bearings

Go safely, may the force be with you

I would not change the king pins/stub axles unless they are worn. A bearing renewal takes a morning, a king pin job can take the best part of a weekend and that assumes you have all the replacement bits!

When you remove the existing bearings think about how they fit on the stub axle. If they are obviously loose then that would indicate wear and the stub axle is most likely to be the culprit. If they are a push/tight fit then the play is either in the bearings or in the hub outer. Again you can play around with the old races to judge the level of fit.
If there is play due to shaft wear you should be able to see some sort of "witness" mark where the bearing has been turning on the shaft.
When you buy new bearings, make sure you get the quality ones!

stub axle removal is an adventure

I dont think being stupid or an idiot has any advantages to the job at hand.... its still a sucky job
