MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Ignition timing

First thanks to onno and mgmike big help. I have now installed a piper 270 cam and all timed in (i hope) in a 1500 plus stage 2 head. Could someone please advise how to do ignition timing is it the same way as a standard 1500 as in Haynes or is it different.
S Rix

Ignition timing is very dependant on engine spec.
And not realy planable ahead.

But generaly you can make some assumptions.

For A-series engines max advance usualy ends up around the 30-32 degree advance mark.
Usualy you set the timing at 32 degrees and go for a drive to check if you hear pinking in the medium/lower rpm regions.
If so retard a little and try again.

For the figures to aim for we need someone who has some 1500 experiance.

Now just to be curious what do you think a stage 2 head means?
Onno K

Hi onno thanks for the info again, the head has been modified by Peter burgess to stage 2
S Rix

Yes but what does stage 2 mean?
What work was involved?
Onno K

You would probably be better talking to Peter Burgess.

No this is not one tuners issue.

There is no clear "stage" tuning and mentioning stages can give the wrong impression.
Certainly if you have a technical question for which the spec is important.

For some a cleaned up head with std valves is stage 2 for others stage 2 means reworked head and bigger valves.
The higher the stages get the more confusing it gets

The only thing I am trying to do is get clear what the spec realy is
Onno K

Stage 2 definition? That's easy, it's had a bit more work done to it than a Stage 1 but less than a Stage 3. :) lol
Greg H

Quite right Greg, One man's stage 1 is another man's stage II etc etc.

There are no industry standards and no TUV-type approval to show what is what!

Steves head is what I would call a Fast Road Plus we are running the 37.5mm inlet valves. The head is going to run with twin sidedraughts so we had to extensively modify the manifold and ports so all lined up well. I suppose the head could be considered full race but the CR is only 9.75:1.

Setting the timing to around 26 max to start with should be ok for a trip to our rollers.
