MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Inner Rear Arches

Evening all,

Long time no post. Hope you are all well! The place I work has started blocking sites they deem "inappropriate" which includes all forums. The BBS had been sneaking under the radar for a while but they have now blocked it. boooo! Thus why I have been a bit MIA recently.

Anywho, things have been progressing. Front and back have been re-mated and even got a snap of the car looking like a car again when trial fitting wings etc. (see pic)

I have started attacking the passenger rear wing, whilst at a glance it looked ok it turns out it is made mostly of fibreglass and rust. On the drivers side I went to the effort of replacing the inner arch. It was such a massive faff I don't really want to do it again!

Anyone have any tips with respect to this part of the bodywork.

Thanks in advance Guy! ;-D

Cheers,
Malcolm

No pressure then, Malc! No tips at all I am afraid.
If it needs repair there isn't any short cut that I know of! The only cheerful thing I would say is that it will be quicker and easier than the first side because you now will have got your head around the construction and will be able to just bash on with it. It is easier with the car at a sensible working height - I found that tipped on its side made it easier.

Still, its looking good with the wings in position, even if they are only balanced there for the photo! Good progress though. Congratulations!
Guy W

Great progress, keep going, I think your progress is directly inversely proportional to the amount of time you spent on the BBS. KEEP GOING! - (don't panic).

All I can say is its decisions time .....

Its looking great Malc. There are no short cuts. I will be catching up with my put offs over the next year or so.

She's definitely worth it. (The girl you fool).

I'l get my coat before you chuck something at me like a welders slag hammer.

Keep in touch :-)

Thanks for the encouragement Guy and Dave.

Progress was directly proportional to taking a week off work! Still plenty of things on the to do list though.

Cheers,
Malcolm

Malc,
no tips from me either. Rear wings are all a faff...
Are you keeping the rubber bumpers? I prefer this....

Nice looking Karmann Ghia. Have you sorted out the collapsed suspension yet?

'bout time we had some thread drift. I have often wondered, but why do people obscure number plates on photos of their cars? Anyone can walk down the street and copy your car number, so why?
Guy W

Guy,
not a Karmann Ghia but a Porsche 356 replica by Covin. Similar to a Ghia under the skin but has it's own chassis. Quite rare and a bit of a challenge to get an IVA on but that's for a different forum ;) Collapsed suspension? they all look like that :)

There's a lot less people walking down my street than on t'internet and sometimes it doesn't pay to advertise too much....

I don't really know Guy, but I obscure mine on the web too.

I'll just borrow Mike's reply.
" ---- it doesn't pay to advertise too much... ".

Mike,
I was muddling your 356 with someone else' Karmann that was posted on here a little while ago. And that one definitely had collapsed suspension. Just cannot remember now who it was . Andy?

Whether its people walking down the street, or people on the internet. What are they going to do with your number plate if they do see it? Still wondering if it is a scam I should be taking advantage of!

Guy W

Hey Mike, hope you are well?

Nope, bumpers will be going (or have gone already...). Both front arches needed doing, so it was less welding/cheaper to get 1275 arches without the front bumper supports so nothing to hang front bumper off.

Also, as I have to replace both rear wings the replacement lower halves come with the "extra" bit under the rear lights then the only other bit is the rear end section circa £90 and not much work and it's bumperless.

I have basically gone a very long way round to having a 1275 shell. Though there will still be the extra bumper support bits in the boot.

Hi Malc,
all good here mate just too many projects and too little time..
The reason for asking was I see you are still using the 1500 front valance with the slots where I went with the 1275 closed panel. Still, it's looking real good....

Crack on and get it finished...

Guy, ringing ;) The act of transferring an ID to another car. Sometimes done to sell a stolen car....

Mike, thought maybe it was that, but one needs a lot more than just the number plate - which is surely the easiest bit to acquire.
Guy W

Guy,
you would think so wouldn't you. Alas all you need is the number plate, the VIN, a form V62 and £25.
Now, you would hope the VIN is somewhat harder to get on t'net but I've seen some very incorrect VIN's for older cars that haven't been corrected over the years. Add to this the suspect quality of the systems in the DVLA (although they seem to be getting a lot better) and the likelihood of a V5C being issued increases.
I've heard of cases where fines have been issued to a "plate" in a completely different part of the country from where the rightful owner resides (or has ever visited).

Caution is better than ID theft...

Best of....
