MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Kingpin Damage?

Hello Ladies and Gents,

Finally bought myself a vice for my workbench (ex-dining table) today. Should have bought one ages ago! Flew through the disassebly of one of my front corners!

Anyway, everything is so crudded up I thought I would pull it all apart clean it up and reassemble. When I took the upright off the king pin I saw this... (see attached)

There are marks where the king pin appears to have been heated, do you think perhaps it is damaged? And why so? lack of lubrication? Also, this section of the kingpin is less smooth than the rest of the KP, don't know if this is normal?

Cheers guys (and gals),

That pin look fine to me. How much play when in situ?

The marks look like they were made in manufature. They don't get hot in the stub axle. And that part sits between the brass bushes anyway, so don't worry if not smooth, it's not the bearing surface.

Malcolm,
pin looks fine with what looks like only light scoring on the bearing surfaces. They are heat treated at the bearing sections to improve life I think. Main thing is to ensure no lateral movement with the stub on.

Never checked play when it was assembled on the car, however there was nothing reported on its last MOT 6 years ago and couldn't detect anything when I clamped it in the vice and gave it a wiggle!

Glad it's OK! Thanks guys.

In far better nick than my 'pins...
