MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Leaf Spring Front Mount Spacers

The rear of my 1500 is a bit low and could do with lifting a few mil.

The springs are only a few years old and I don't want to renew these yet. I believe that some 1500's were fitted with Leaf Spring Front Mount Spacers, does anyone know where I could find any, I know these could be made but before I do I just wanted to check if any were available anywhere?

Thanks
Tim

thought they were standard on 1500 you could try andy jennings for some
mark heyworth

They may have been, but they do not appear to be on any 1500 part breakdowns, not tried Andy Jennings thou

I might have some in a box, if you want them?

Will try to make time to check tonight.
Malcolm

Thanks Malcolm, if you can find them I will gladly pay for a pair, strange how some parts become hard to come by and the vast majority so easy to source.

I fitted new springs (a leaf had broken in the original springs) 2.5 years ago to my 1500 and they were sagging within 18 months. I ended up buying a pair of old, used springs (presumably original fitments) which I fitted over the bank holiday weekend. Despite their age, the rear of the car is now around 2 inches higher than it was! FYI the spacers were definitely present on the front mounts.

Thanks Philip, I had one heck of a job finding new springs and was just thankful to find some but looks like the same may have happened with mine.

Now I see why people go to the trouble of having them made to order, but good also to hear that yours had spacers fitted, strange thou that they are no longer listed on any parts breakdown.

My before and after pictures from swapping springs last weekend. The before: 2.5 year old replacement springs. The after: 40 plus year old second hand springs.

Yours if you want them Tim.

Philip, that's one heck of a difference, how can new springs be so bad, I had a leaf spring snap on a dual carriageway on the way to France a couple of years ago and it was a frightening experience feeling the car jump sideways at 60mph, its worrying how strong these modern springs are.

Malcolm, yes I would like to take up your offer please, I will drop you a message.

Tim Lynam

The new springs looked fine when first fitted, but within 18 months and only a couple of thousand miles ended up per the first picture - I was very disappointed!

One leaf broke in the original springs - to be honest I was not immediately aware of it, but noticed it when doing routine maintenance. When the coil spring broke in my 'modern' car a few years ago, that was a very different experience! Fortunately I was just backing the car off the drive, but the car was completely undrivable and had to be trailered to the garage!
