MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Letter punch sizes for the vin plate

As it says on the title.
What size letter punches do you need for a vin plate on a 1970 midget

I have some 4mm punches and they look fine.

You're welcome to give them a try.

Not quite what you asked, but:

You can get Minimail to supply a reverse stamped VIN plate, see: http://www.minimail.co.uk/chassis-vin-plates/

Also can buy blank plates from Minispares (check in Terry Horler's 'Orig Sprite & Midget' for correct plate): http://www.minispares.com/search/classic/chassis%20plate.aspx

When did the VIN become raised? Mine is the inset type.

1966 Midget

I bought my stamps at Machine M*rt (3 or 4mm size) they look 'right' to me and the MOT man which matters...
Bill1

I very much doubt the average mot man will know what size letters were used on these cars, or if they were raised or inset. In fact, given the amount of dirt and corrosion on mine, I don't think they can even check. They just read it from the last mot or log book if you take it with you.
Lawrence Slater

I think Lawrence has it right there. And when my car's plate was made in '66 I doubt if there were metric stamps available at a BMC factory anywhere.

If you want to do "look right" numbers the letter and number punch set I bought from Machine Mart were model ET105 '060723060' 4mm combined 36 piece set.

They "look right" on my chassis plate.

If you want a borrow or "bring 'em I stamps 'em for you"

let me know

Hi bill
Thanks for the offer. I'll get some punches and DIY

Interestingly the vin plate on my old lotus élan +2 had the chassis number scratched on with what I can only guess was a scribe in the handwriting of whoever was at the end I the production line.
