MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Line boring 948...
Line boring 948... to take 3 camshaft bearings a) worth doing? (previously been running a 649 cam: prior to my build and probably going to take a 731/MG metro/Kent 276 from now..) b) know engineering shops that will do it? only found one in romford (wrong side of the country) that will do it? |

I always did it to my 948 race engines. I used Coventry Boring and Metalling. Surely there's someone more local? |

Paul Inch in Plymouth is your man. |

literally appears only people in the country who still do it will be Gosnays in Romford. |

Do you have an early 948 ? Most have 3 replaceable steel backed white metal liners that only need reaming once fitted. Is it not a fairly normal line boring job to bore out and fit ? There is a traditional engine machine shop in Bridgewater that advertises - not used them - will look up the name. R. |

I will have to check next time pull it apart but pretty sure it was an early one with the single bearing. The job to actually bore the block to fit 3 bearings seems to be very specialised. I have used Barum Engineering in Barnstable before (they do a free pick up from an agricultural place in Tiverton) and they were great for head skimming, conrod straightening, etc |

Most 948's have one bearing at the front. Only the later 948's fitted to the early MkII Sprite had 3. Unless there are rear signs of wear in the rear journals perhaps just replace the front one? |
