MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Max Advance
Can I ask what the max advance should be - I’ve forgotten- age again !
My dizzy has been in and out what with the Ignitor being replaced by Aldon when it died and I never really timed it accurately when I put it back in. It’s an Aldon yellow top dizzy and the cam I think is a 266 seem to remember 28-30 deg btdc with vac still connected? Then need to get a young assistant to climb under with the lamp ! Currently running again after more fuel issues - I find the HIF more fussy than the HS2 for fuel ? Really should get it back on a rolling road but Aldon and Peter B are a long way from N Zumerset. Thanks R. |

Richard, 28-30 is a good safe spec. 32 used to be the number to go to but there's been a trend to pulling it back a bit.
I'd run it somewhere 30-32 probably 32 unless a dyno session says less BUT the vac hose needs to be "OFF" while checking. and Don't fall into the trap of setting it at 3000 or similar and thinking that's full advance as some do. It depends on the setup in your distributor as to if advancing has finished at that point, it could well have a few more degrees in it when you increase the revs---so a good rev with the light flashing is essential to make sure at what point you have actually reached max. advance Don't forget to refit the vac. hose when you finish willy |

Thanks Willy, Thought it was 30deg but good to check and I got the vac wrong - I always remove it when checking the basic dynamic. Thought about you the other day as my block paving needs water blasting to get get rid of the winter algae etc and still only a few weeds ! - did you ever use the setting sand ? Thanks Alan, I had heard of him but never used him. Actually hes out side of Bristol at Backwell which is only about 10-15 miles from me - so may try him for a tune up ! R. |

I used to use Slark when he had his RW in Amesbury. Always helpful |

Cheers Richard - Yes finally did the pavers towards the end of last year, had a real trot of bad weather fighting the project, -doesn't take much to stop me though--It all went well and wifey's happy so all good Thanks for your help there willy |

On my race engines my engine builder never goes beyond 28 / 29 degrees, for reliability and longevity. Hence any failures are usually oil pressure / bearing related. |
