MG Midget and Sprite Technical - New loom 1500

Hi, after some years of ignorant and happy motoring, I've decided to renew my wiring loom. I was amazed how many loose ends, different colours and totale unknown pieces of wire seem to have grown our of the original loom. I encountered recently complete black-outs, rubber smells from under the dash and of course the ultimate encounter with the Prince of Darkness: total electrical failure.

So, who can you recommend for a new wiring loom? Moss loods a bit expensive, Autosparks?

Hi,

I'd go for one from Autosparks, most of the uk based parts suppliers are sourcing from them anyway and putting a mark up om them.

Plus if you deal direct they will incorporate any mods you want to introduce.

Thans for the advice!

I was in the same position with my 1500 loom, but though it had been messed with over the years, it was mostly in good condition so I repaired it. Much cheaper. I also then had the opportunity to add circuits before re-wrapping it so it was actually more practical to 'repair and add' rather than 'buy new and add'.

Hi Nick,

Good suggestion! Tonight I had almost the same thought. Most of the loom (main and rear harness) is pretty untouched. So a clean-up will do. It's mainly the dash loom where all the problematic issues (extra wires, different colours, splits, etc.) seem to be. I think I'll order only a new dash loom. That'll save some cash.

That's one of the benefits of the later 1500 - it has a separate dash loom.

Worth emailing them direct to ask about a part loom.

Also when repairing your old loom, check and clean all earth connections on the whole loom (not just the dash loom). Also check security of connectors (loose wires and corrosion) and whether there is corrosion along the wires under the insulation (if a lot of this, new loom time)

Dave andNick - separate dash loom for 1500s; this is why I like this forum, new things to learn.
